nail trimming

Simon's nails are pretty long, I look like I got mawled by some creature and I wanted to trim his nails. I do have a rock in there that he loves to lay on, but it's not doing anything as far as keeping his nails trimmed. I do have a pair of cat nail timmers, but I don't want to cut too much off his nails.. can someone show me (pictures work fine) or explain to me in good detail how far I need to cut? I would appreciate the help!!
