My vet told me...

I went to the vet about a month ago because of smelly and runny poops. He was found with a massive amount of coccidia and a few pinworms. (I bought him from a pet store 3 months ago) He was given albon for 6 days. I waited a week and took him in for another fecal. Nothing happened so another round of albon. I called this week after the fecal and he told me that this has been trending lately in a lot of his beardie patients. He said that we could try a more potent antibiotic but it might not work. Is this something to be afraid of? :(

From what I've read it usually takes a few rounds of meds to treat worms and parasites. Reptiles don't react well to medical intervention. Standard treatment is kept low to minimize the strain on the animal and that includes dosage of meds. Besides, I think parasites and worms can be notoriously difficult to get rid of with all animals.

Make sure you are keeping the cage VERY clean. Use newspaper or paper towels for substrate, replace daily or sooner if soiled. Clean and sterilize everything in the tank daily. many keep bare boned tanks during treatment. It is very easy for them to be reinfected. coccidia and pinworms can be naturally in their systems in even the most healthy animals, but they are normally kept in check by the good flora. The antibiotics kill the good flora as well as the bad stuff. So during treatment and for a period afterwards they don't have very little or no defense against the bad stuff.

Did he treat the pinworms too? I remember reading that a worm infestation can cause the coccidia count to rise. You might want to make sure the pins are gone first.

I've heard that too, that pinworms should be treated before coccidia.

yeah pinworms must be cleaned first from his tummy and then coccidia

for the pinworms I suggest a PANACUR meds and after when the pinworms are gone u can order a Ponazuril med. against Coccidia

The vet told me it's common to see some pinworms in a beardie and it's no threat. Is it possible I can just ask for these medications from a vet?

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
