I was at Petco the other day in the reptile section, checking out the different herps and products, etc. I was standing near the fridge where the keep the mealworms, waxworms, and other worms that need to be refrigerated. I had wanted to buy a tub of Calciworms just to try but every container I opened and checked already had beetles in them so I had to scratch that plan. There was a girl standing next to me looking at the shelves of commercial foods and supplements and we started talking. I asked what she was feeding and turns out she has a beardie. While talking about feeders we found that we both keep feeder roach colonies. I mentioned wanting to start a colony of lats and she told me that she had a huge colony with more than she needed and would gladly give me a bunch to start my own colony. Definitely wasn't going to turn her down lol, so a couple of days ago I went to her house and she gave me a tupperware container full of lats. I set them up in their bin yesterday and I can already tell that I'm going to like them better than the lobsters. They do climb, but not very well, but of course I put a 3" wide barrier around the top of the bin using Johnson's Lavender Baby Oil Gel (random, I know lol, but I've discovered that it works extremely well, much better than even vaseline, I think because of the consistency and I also suspect the lavender scent deters them for some reason). So far they really even haven't tried to climb up high enough to even reach the barrier. Haven't fed them to anything yet, but considering how many I was given and how quickly they breed, I'll be able to start feeding out of it pretty soon. Here are a couple of pics:

Question, why dont you raise dubia? Just wondering if it is illegal where you live too. If you cant because it is illegal you might be able to raise discoid instead. But I dont know if that is every where but you can here in FL. Dont know if that is an option for you but since they cant climb glass you might like them better. I would like to try some discoids but my mother wont let me yet.

Nice colony! :blob5:

I actually do have a dubia colony lol. A lobster one too. I just like to have as wide a variety of feeders as possible, and their care is so easy that 3 colonies still takes almost zero effort to maintain.

ETA: Lats and Lobsters also breed much faster than dubia so you're able to get an established colony that you can feed from much more quickly than with dubia.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
