My new class pet!

I'm a history teacher who wanted another class pet. His name is Ramses (I know beardies aren't from Egypt but just go with it) and he is a rescued beardie. He's about two years old and he is only about 7" and weights 98 grams.

He now has UVB, repticarpet, and all the bells and whistles. My students raised over $200 to fund the project.

I work at a charter school in Mass.

I do have a quick question though. My beardie always sees to want to hide under his ramp..he rarely comes out unless its to chase down crickets. I know the temp isn't too hot....any reason why my beardie like shade??

I was just reading your other post about that actually, how long have you had him?

I got him about three weeks ago. He was malnourished and weak according to the vet. He came in a 20 long tank and even in that tank he hid beneath a ramp.

I put him in the bigger 55 tank and he still prefers to hide! Like I said when you put crickets in he'll run around. If you pick him up and put him on the other side he'll hang out for a while and eventually go back under the ramp.

Hmm, usually bearded dragons enjoy the shade because it's too hot elsewhere in their tanks. Perhaps your bearded dragon just prefers to be in the shade? Bearded dragons have such unique personalities, it's very enjoyable watching them to find their own quirky behaviors. If you know for sure that the temperatures are correct, then I wouldn't worry about it. Perhaps he just feels safe in that spot, or maybe he hasn't gotten used to you yet. I will advise though, if you think there's something truly wrong with the dragon, a vet visit is always recommended overall. But, in this case he just seems to be a silly dragon. :lol:

I used an Acurite digi thermometer...and letting it sit for over an hour it was 100 on top of the platform..and 93 at the bottom of the tank

thats ok correct? if hes too ot why doesnt he go down to the cool side?

We have the same digital thermometer, and it's very accurate. I'm unsure on your dragons behavior, since they're beasts of habit his old vivarium may of been way too hot, so he got very used to sitting under the shade.

hes staying down ther cuase to cool off but u should feed him more greens than u do crikets later on but all bearded dragons are different urs is weird lol im guessing he wants to look kool and protecting his home from ur students haha

As a fellow teacher it is AWESOME that you have a class pet. Even more AWESOME that you have a class pet and are NOT a Biology teacher! LOL I hope everything goes well with your Beardie.

When I got him he wouldn'y eat anything but crickets. I got him eating cucumbers and a lil bit of grape from my hand. Still working on other greens..I offer but he never eats em!
