My Bearded dragon was very active just a few days ago. He was sick after eating and despite me taking him to the vet he passed away. I am so upset because we had a lovely bond and I feel I let him down as he died at the vets and not at home. It turns out he died from a twisted intestine, was this my fault for letting him run around the house, or over feeding him? The loss is unbearable

Hi there,

Sorry for your loss.

A twisted intestine is a strange cause of death.. I can't say I have heard of that happening before.
What did your beardie eat that made him so sick?

So sorry for your loss :(

I don't think it was at all from letting him run around. You were being a good parent for doing that as they need exercise and that would have actually helped his intestines.

It might have been a birth defect, and honestly I doubt it was anything you did, and your beardie will know that. You were also a good parent for taking your beardie to the vet.

Please don't hold guilt, even though I know it's hard to do. Just remember all the good times and mourn your baby's passing without all that icky guilt. Your beardie doesn't hold you responsible.

Hello,

I am so sorry for your loss. It is completely devastating I know!
I have heard of a twisted intestine but it is not very common. It may be caused by inbreeding which has nothing to do with your care. Letting him run around the house for exercise is perfectly fine & definitely would not cause his death or a twisted intestine.
He wasn't impacted from anything, correct?

Hi Brandon

Thank you.

He had eaten some salad a about 10 locusts. He had a very big appetite and loved locusts. I normally put them in his home and he enjoyed chasing them but normally never ate the whole lot at once. There are no reptile specialists near us and the first vet had let me take him home because she said he was ok, as he clearly wasn't ok I took him to a different vet, but sadly he passed away. The vet carried out a pm, he had no impactions and his stomach was empty.

It was his rapid decline from appearing full of life to being so ill which feels unbelievable.

Hi Tracie

Thank you.
No the vet who did the pm said he had no food in his tummy or anything impacted.
He was a lovely wee guy and His loss is very sore.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
