I am a nervous wreck! I was told he wouldn't be shipped until this afternoon but I keep checking(tracking) anyway. :? We are all set with his enclosure. I have crickets and phoenix worms. I am getting the greens today. AHHHHHHH! I can't even think straight. I think the shipping is going to be harder on me than on the baby. I plan to give him a bath first thing. Read that I should put a towel under the door incase he tries to head for the hills. He is 6 weeks and 2 days old today. Approx 600 miles from there to here. Quite a journey for such a youngster.
I am sure that many many of you have been through this waiting..... Any suggestions to help me deal??? (Can't drink, I've got kids... )
Welcome to the insanity! I just went through this last week and Sandy (protiemama) did as well. As a matte of fact we both received our babies on the same day.
Can't really offer any advice for the nervousness. It helps to post every once in a while maybe to update on the location of the package or what you're feeling at the moment.
But be warned... now that you've started this post, you will be harrassed for updates and of course pictures!
I have a 50 gal(borrowed from a friend she said it was 50)? (30X12x12)
Reptisun 10.0 uvb tube
exoterra 75W basking bulb
a reptile ramp with a slate tile on the basking spot (to retain the heat)
a hammock (for fun)
2 hides, one made from 2"x2" bricks and slate tiles over it and the other is a reptile hut (little wood bark thingy)
On the floor I have about 2/3 slate tiles and 1/3 paper towels
My temps (with digital indoor/outdoor thermometer from walmart) are 113.0* at basking spot (breeder says he uses 115 for his babies so I went just a little lower to be safe), and cool side is 79.0*
My basking spot is 6" from lights.
I have collard greens, 1/4" crickets and XSM phoenix worms (went small to be on the safe side), Rep-Cal calcium w/D3 and Herptivite vitamins
I am feeding my crickets carrots, cricket calcium gut loading food (fluckers) and fish food. I use water crystals as their water source.
Also, I ordered a blanket and viv blankie from blondie (on here who makes them)
113 may be a bit warm, but you'll be able to tell in the first couple of days after he arrives. If he doesn't want to stay in his basking area or he thermoregulates too often, you may want to consider lowering the basking temps.
As far as hides go, there are some who are for and some who are against. Since dragons are a species who "mask" illness, I do not have hides for any of my 5 dragons, as if they were hiding, then there wouldn't be any way for me to tell if there was something wrong with them. Again it is a personal choice and there will be others that will tell you why or why not to have them. Once you know your dragon's personality, then you can do what you feel is best for him.
Just a heads up... don't be surprised if all of that yummy food doesn't get eaten for a few days :? We still have 2000 or so little crix that haven't been touched and we have had our new babies since last Wednesday

I know exactly how you feel! My baby is being shipped today too! My little guy doesn't have quite as long of a journey though. But it's still long for a 7 week baby. The UPS man is gonna think I'm crazy, because I'm not going to be able to wait at my door when I see the truck coming. I'll be at his door before he even puts the car in park; staring at him from the sidewalk
YEA! It's nice to hear from someone who is getting a baby today also. This is my first beardie and first time getting an animal shipped. The waiting is killing me... I put paper on my viv this morning blocking 3 sides. I hope my baby eats so the food doesn't go bad... That would suck!
Where did you get your baby from?
Thanks for the advise about the basking temp. I will watch for that. I know how important it is for them to warm thier bellies so they can digest their food. I just wanted it to be as "familiar" as possible.
I got him from a user on here, HowlinGaleDragon. He's one of Bow's and Sapphira's babies (if you know her beardies). I bought some food today too, so hopefully he feels like eating. I tried to get some of the same stuff his breeder fed him so that he's used to it already. Oh man, I can't wait for our babies to be here. I might go take pics of my viv later and post them on my topic...to keep me somewhat preoccupied. lol. I've already been writing out lists of random beardie stuff to keep me busy...but my pad of paper is almost out. haha. Well keep us posted!!!
I have a little note pad that I have been taking notes on since I started preparing to get a dragon that is full also! I almost got a dragon from Howlingale, but then I saw this little guy and fell in love with his markings. His black markings look like melted hersey kisses! Hershey would've been a cute name for him... He was just so different. He's from Thevirus (breeder). He seems like a really cool guy.
What are you using as substrate? How big of a tank? What basking temp (My biggest issue) ?
I got collard greens because that's what he's been being fed also. The phoenix worms will be new to him but so many people say that beardies love them so I thought it might be good if he won't eat crickets due to stress.
