Mushu and Haku update

Hey guys, I haven't been on in a couple weeks so I wanted to come on and share the recent happenings of my rescued beardie, Mushu, as well as ask some questions concerning my new beardie Haku.

My most recent post was about Mushu having pin worms and declining rapidly. We ended up losing her last Friday and the necropsy showed she had liver failure from fatty liver disease which the vet says started before we rescued her. As sad as I have been I was very happy to hear that we prolonged her life by a few months and that if she had stayed in her previous owners care she would not have made it this far. Due to it being graphic I don't think I will post the necropsy picture, but her liver was three inches by three inches and bright yellow. I appreciate all the help and support I received on here and thought it would be nice to give everyone this update, despite how upsetting it is.

Now on to Haku. Once Mushu came up positive for pinworms we decided it was time to do a fecal for Haku. We have had her for a little over a month but moved her into a bigger tank two days before bringing in her fecal which came back positive for coccidia. She has enough that they think we should treat her but I had a few questions first.
1. Do you think moving her into the big tank a few days before would cause enough stress to show a higher count than what is actually present (should we wait a week and do another fecal before giving her medicine)
2. What should we expect while treating her (will she stop eating or act differently)
3. What are the best ways to make sure the tank is clean enough that she doesn't reinfect herself?

She also is having an issue with shed right now. All of her limbs recently turned white, and I'm sure in a couple more days they will shed fine, but her tail has been stuck for quite some time (maybe two weeks) and she seems to hate when we touch it which makes me think it's hurting her or bothering her in some way. We give baths everyday and have also tried putting oil on it. Do you guys have any other good methods for helping a stuck shed? We have increased the humidity in her tank (not much, it's probably at 30-40%) to try to help.

Sorry for all the info in one post, I know it is a lot but any help or input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there, so sorry to hear about Mushu....our scaly friends can be so fragile and susceptible to these terrible illnesses. :(

On to Haku. :) How old is she, what size ? Don't worry about a shed taking a long time, it happens with all beardies at one time or another. Unless it's actually tightened around the tail [ usually the tip ] and is visibly causing constriction ten it will be fine. Is she eating well ? Can you post pics ? And yes, it's possible that relocation stress has caused a spike in the coccidia count so you might just wait 3-4 weeks and see how her appetite goes. Hopefully Haku will live a long + happy life with you. :)

She is a little under four months. She's 11 inches and 92 grams.

The shed is actually right where her tail meets her body, it doesn't look like it's constricting but she doesn't seem fond of us touching it or using the baby tooth brush on it in the bath.

Her appetite is awesome. Eating about 100 crickets a day (smaller than the space between her eyes) along with her veggies. I think I will wait a week or two and try to bring in another fecal before we give her any medicine. I will try to post some pictures in a few minutes.

It all sounds perfectly normal, she's doing great ! I would advise you to let her grow a few inches [ which will happen quickly ] and let her fanTASTIC appetite continue to blossom before getting her tested + treated for the coccidia. Some vets will prescribe meds. even with a low number, and if she's eating well you want to let her get some heft on her. Coccidia meds. can mess with their appetite, so a larger dragon can handle not eating much better than a small dragon. Oh, and here's a pic of one of mine with a crazy shed....it's not harmful at all.

Oh awesome! What beautiful colors!
I was thinking it was an issue because she tends to squirm around when you try to touch it but I'm sure it's similar to someone touching our sunburn in a sense.

Around how big should I let her get before I treat her? They said it's a pretty high count so I don't know what my best option is.

Thank you. :) I think it's safe to wait about 3-4 weeks, let her settle in and if she continues eating like that she'll grow a good 2" and possibly gain another 40 grams or so.

So sorry for your loss :(..must have been hard to lose her like that.

On a happier note, our beardies have the same name, Haku :) How is she doing? She's such a cutie in your pictures!

Cheers,
~Amber

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
