I'm still in disbeleif that my Chia's back...
What happened was last weekend was pretty much our last nice weather of the year. We had a high of 28'C/82'F, so I thought it'd be great to get the two beardies out in their outdoor enclosure to enjoy the sun one last time. All was going well for the afternoon. We ran out for just a quick drive... I wanted to get back before it started to cool off so that I could get them back inside, but when we got back, only Sancho was hanging out in the enclosure! We have no idea how Chia could've escaped, it's a pretty large (and heavy) wire cage with only small slats between the bars... We looked all over the yard (this is harder than it seems as we live in the country on acreage, with the one half of our property heading into swampy woods). We even let the cat out to see if she might lead us, or see something we're not seeing, as the sun was going down now (she gets along quite well with the dragons, will watch and follow them etc.). My boyfriend set up a heat emitter near to where the enclosure is, in hopes of luring her back to that area... but it wasn't warm enough to keep the ground/grass significantly warm.
I pretty much had lost all hope 24 hours later... It gets very cold here at night (close to freezing/in the mid 30's'F, even this early in the fall), and it poured rain all the next day, and for most of the week to follow, with the highs not getting much higher than 15'C/59'F. Aside from the unfriendly weather, we also have feral cats, stray dogs, large predatorial birds... Overall, around here, it's not a very welcoming environment for a beardie!
Just yesterday evening, around 6 pm when it was starting to cool off for night, my boyfriend was out working on his car on the far side of the property... He heard a scratching/scraping sound, but shrugged it off as nothing really jumped out. The next time he heard it though, he happened to notice Chia trying to navigate her way down from the top of our firewood pile! He managed to scoup her up without trouble and brought her inside. She must've been climbing up there to get as much sun/warmth as possible.
She had turned dark, but was still very active, alert, and happy to eat... I still have no idea how she managed in the wilderness for that long!
I don't think I'll feel comfortable having them in an outdoor enclosure again though...
So glad she's back!
