Hey everyone!!

I originally posted this in the health forum, but it's only got one reply so I thought it might be best to move it here. Sorry if that was the wrong thing to do!! Anyway...

So it's been a while that I've had to post in a health forum (thank goodness!), but I wanted to ask you guys some advice about what might be wrong with Errol's lips.

Basically, I took him to the vet a few weeks ago, as his top lip on each side of his head (almost directly opposite) seemed to have started to swell, and to have developed a yellowy crust/scab on them. First time I noticed it, I thought it might be retained shed, so I used a cotton wool bud and soaked it until it came off. FIne. But then it came back, so I started to worry it could be the start of mouth rot, and shot him off to the vets.

The vet said it wasn't mouth rot (there was no discharge or bad smell when he opened his mouth), but he said the inside of his mouth looked very yellow, and was concerned his liver might be problematic, as at the time he wasn't being super active, nor was his eating great. He said his lips might be because he'd damaged them eating or rubbing his shed off, but they weren't healing quickly because he was under the weather with the worms. This set my mind at rest, as this vet is very knowledgeable and has always served me and my companions well in the past. He was far more concerned about his liver.

He took bloods, and ordered a full range test to be done for anything and everything. He also looked at a fecal sample I had taken with me, and said his worm count was up, so he gave him panacur and said he'd be in touch with the blood results.

Anyway, a couple of days later, Errol had really picked up (I'm guessing from the Panacur) and was racing about as normal. His appetite still wasn't great, but he's never been all that good at eating greens especially - only thing is now he won't eat insects unless you hold them up to him really. That is still how he is currently.

The vet rang with the blood results a day later and said everything was normal, no infections, liver functioning fine and everything was good. So I was happy as he was really perky and back to normal.

However, his lips are no better. I've read all sorts of posts on here and I'm beginning to worry that it might be a fungal infection, but I know this is mainly associated with a viv which is a bit too humid - no way is Errol's humid at all!!! I don't know if they are worse - perhaps a little - but then that's probably because I'm paniccing a little. I've also noticed some discolouration on his belly today in addition, so yeah I'm starting to stress out...

Here are some pictures (they are massive because the areas are so tiny and I wanted you guys to be able to see them clearly - sorry!):

I've phoned the vets, and I couldn't go until Friday (due to work), but beacuse of the blooming Bank Holidays coming up, they haven't got any appointments free until the beginning of May now!!! So I wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar, and how I might go about starting my own treatment until I can get his appointment in May. I read about giving baths in weak iodine solution every day (he has a daily bath anyway), and applying topical creams, followed by tea-tree oil solution, but because it is his mouth I'm concerned about him eating creams!!!

Additionally, I live in England, and getting hold of idodine without prescription is impossible, I found some spray with indine in it, when my snake had belly rot, but that's absolutely it.

His stats are as follows:

Viv size: 2.5 feet by 1.5 feet and 1.5 feet tall (I have just put him into this tank - it's basically my hospital tank as I can keep it that little bit warmer than his normal tank which is 4 feet by 2 feet and 2 feet tall, and I can keep it in my room so I can keep a better eye on him when I'm doing my uni work)

Warm side: 95
Cool side: 85
Basking spot: 105

No heating over night

Temp measuring equipment: Digital heat gun

UV lamp make: Exoterra Repti-Glo 10.0 (less than 6 months old and situated inside the viv)

Heat lamp type: normal heat spot lamp (not red spot lamp or ceramic). I'm afraid I can't remember the make!

Bedding: Aspen normally, but currently newspaper

Greens diet: Staple of spring/collard greens (he eats, but only say an egg-cup full per day even though there is plenty available), red bell pepper (he won't eat), butternut squash (he rarely eats), watercress now and then (he loves), dandilion leaves (he'll eat), carrot (he won't eat), tried him on fruits like strawberry, blueberries, and other bits (he only eats blueberries, but very occasionally).

Insect diet: Brown crickets (as many as he'll go for - which recently he won't even chase them, but will eat them if they are close to his face i.e. when I hold them up to him), Morioworms (he used to munch these out of his bowl, but again I have to hold them in front of him for him to eat - he will have like 15 one day, then will refuse them for a couple of days).

Nutrient suppliments: Nutribal sprinkled on food or dusted on insects twice per week (3 times if he's not eaten much on the days I give him it) and for the rest of the time Calci-Dust. In fact, he doesn't seem keen on eating anything if it doesn't have powder of some sort on it, which I noticed recently and think is a little bit wierd...

Exercise: He is allowed to run around ouside his viv every single day when I get home and can supervise him. I just open the door and let him come and go as he pleases, and he's really great at getting back in the bask when he's getting cold. I've recently taken him outside for 30 mins the last couple of days, as it's started to get warm over here in Britain for a bit, so making the most of it!!

Other: He poops every day. There's always urates which are a good colour and a similar amount every day, but the poop part varies depending how much he's been eating (obviously) as does colour really. I always inspect it and he seems to be digesting things well. Only time he wasn't was when he worm cound was high.

I hope I've given you guys enough info to try help me!!

Cheer,
Emma and Errol 8)

It doesn't look like any fungus I've ever seen, more likely its a infection of some sort. I would find a different vet, he should be on antibiotics. You could also have a scraping done to test for fungus.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
