Miami is expensive!

Hi guys. I was wondering if any of you might live in Florida/Miami area and could give me a suggestion for cheap veggies. I moved here from Ohio last week and when I went to buy some kale, it was $3.00 at the "cheap" grocery store, and it none of it looked healthy. It was only $1.00 in Cleveland! Wow. So that surprised me. The prices at other places seem to be pretty consistent. Any suggestions from those of you "in the know" who could recommend what veggie might be cheaper in the area? Or do I just need to suck it up and shell out $3 for crappy veggies? Yoshi can be kind of a snob when it comes to her veggies, I haven't had much luck with anything other than collard greens and kale.
Perhaps I ought to look for a farmers market too.
PS, if this sounds stingy, I'm a grad student atm so every penny counts! Books are $200 this semester. :?

AHHH yes... It is expensive their!! I stayed their for a few months. The best I can say is to go to one of the little corner bodegas!! They are usually cheaper!! Good luck, I love it their!!!

HI! I live in south Florida and the best place I have found to buy greens is Super Walmart. Better than any of the local grocery stores. The other place I have found good quality vegetables is Fresh Market, and they are also reasonably priced. Hope that helps!

OK, thank you both very much! I will try your suggestions. Yeah it is expensive; and not to mention that one of y textbooks this semester cost me $250!!! Ouch!
And btw, I do like it here, but I would like it better if my apartment roommies would let me turn on the air conditioning. I'm dying here!

Oh, wow, that is REALLY bad! I don't know if this will make you feel any better, but the heat right now is the worst it gets, it will start cooling down a little in a few weeks. If I were you I would spend a lot of time in the library studying!

Yea Miami is expensive. I just suck it up and buy my vegetables from wholefoods. I try to get the best veg no matter the price cause i eat them also so its almost like i'm shopping for myself, but wholefoods or once in a while i try walmart or Publix. You guys are luck your only paying 250 for books. I'm an international student my tuition is over 12000. Then i got to go get books after also.

i live in south florida too. i've lived here pretty much my whole life , i really don't know how much cheaper or more expensive anything is else where compared to south florida , i do spend a fortune on groceries tho. anyway i shop at super walmart, seems to be alot cheaper , way cheaper than any publix, also sometimes you can find a farmer's market, like at a flea market and they usually sell fresh veggies for a fraction of the cost and the veggies are good too.

A lot of times veggie stands are a lot cheaper too! Kale isn't really a good staple food for your beardie anyway (too high in oxalates). Collard greens are usually *really* cheap and they are a great green to feed. Also, squash can be good, cuz it stores much better than greens, I grate it all and freeze part of it for later

oh ya , and mustard greens , at super walmart you can get a (one) bunch for 99 cents and turnip greens too ! they are very good staple greens.

Yeah, I totally agree with Super Walmart. Hey Dawn, I just moved out of Coral Springs a few months ago! Lived at Sample and 441. I had to move east again though, I missed the beach!

oh and btw, superwalmart has had the best veggies so far, which is actually contrary to my general experience with walmart veggies, but hey I'll take it.
