Merlin & I

Hi. I'm new to this site so I thought I'd say hi. I just got a beardie last week. I named him Merlin. Before I got him I went online and read up on Beardies so I'd have the right set up before I got him. I'm glad I did because where I got him from well, I don't think they know as much as they claim to but I was limited on where to get him around here and I didn't really want to get one off the internet. Merlin is about 5 3/4 inches from the tip of his nose to his tail. I asked how old he was but didn't get an answer out of the salesgirl. She said she really didn't know. Can anyone hazard a guess for me? He's doing well. He actually acts friskier than when I got him last week. She said they were only feeding him six crickets once a day. He's not offering to eat any greens yet even though I've been offering them. I'm thinking he's too little for them yet? She told me to feed mealworms and crickets and switch days but I've read some conflicting reports on mealworms so I've only been doing crickets so far.

Sounds like your dragon is in the 4-7 week old range. It can be difficult to tell since some babies pop out at 4 1/2 inches but that age range covers the biggins and the runts well.

Just wanted to mention that meal worms are not recommended as a staple (fed daily) because of their chitin shell and not much meat on them. This can cause impaction in a baby dragon. Crickets are a good staple, appropriately sized (no bigger than the space between their eyes) as long as they are gutloaded. (which basically means fed well)
Many baby beardies ignore greens and veggies, but do come to like them in time. I got luck with my female, she ate them from the start, but it took my male dragon until he was 3yrs old before he would eat them, LOL

Thanks, LJean. I stopped there today to stock up on crickets for the week and they were pushing the mealworms again. I told them that I'd rather stick with the crickets. And I have been getting them appropriately sized and gut feeding them. I bought special cricket food for them. Hopefully, I'm doing everything right. I wish he was older than he is. He's real cute but from what I've read babies are trickier to raise than say if I'd managed to get a juvenile. I do think reading the info on this site should help both of us out, Merlin and me. Had an exciting first experience with him today (Gosh, I hope it's a him???) I got him to sit on my hand for awhile. He hasn't allowed me to do that until now. Before this he's been getting upset and running away from me. Not acting like he's aggressive just running away. I didn't want to stress him so I let him go. Today he decided to let me hold him and once he tried it, he seemed to decide that it's not half bad to sit on the humans hand.
