megaray dimensions

How long in the megaray (from where it comes out of the fixture to the end of the bulb)? I'm trying to figure out everything for the enclosure i'm building and where to mount the lights so I have at least the minimum 12" from the basking spot. Thanks for your help!

Hi Ryan,

Just went through the same thing a few days ago when I got my megaray. It is 5 1/2" from where it comes out of the socket/fixture.

With the MVB's, it's a good idea to use a deep dome since the bulb is so long, that way, the dome will sit flat on the screen rather than the bulb sticking out from the dome itself and preventing it from sitting flat.

I'm going to build an enclosure out of an old entertainment center...similar to the crossfire enclosures so I will be mounting the MVB into a flood light fixture installed in the ceiling of the enclosure. This will be ok won't it?

Yes, that's fine....you're mouting your lights on the inside of your enclosure. Diane was just letting you know that if you were to put them on top of the screen that you would need a deep domed fixture or the bulb would extend past the dome preventing it from sitting level.

Yes, you can mount it on the inside, but those bulbs get very hot and the distance needs to be accurate. Also, you might want to consider getting one of the wire cages that go over the bulbs to prevent your beardie from getting burned very badly if he bumps into it or jumps.

It would be approximately 14" from the basking spot as far as I have figured. Can they jump this high and hit the bulb?

Actually, my 4 year old female surprised me the other day by jumping about 2 feet. :shock: So, if you have a juvenile or baby, I would be very cautious. Getting a wire cage to put over the bulb would be the safest.

Wow! I didn't realize they could jump that high! haha! Looks like I'll be looking for a wire cage to go around the bulb then after all! Think I saw some that were cheap at home depot that would work good...they are made for work lights like those at construction sites and stuff like that. Thanks for letting me know as I never would have thought they could jump like that!

At Tractor Supply, there are large deep dome brooders with a porcelian socket and WITH a wire attachment to keep animals away from the heat source. $9.99!!!!

I'm going to have mine going into a flood light kit mounted to the ceiling of the enclosure so I won't need the socket/lamp part...figure if I can't find something that fits I would just make one at work...I make firetrucks so I can make some cool stuff out of metal thats pretty cheap and i'm sure we have something that would work!
