Hi,

I've ordered 3 megaray's 100W SB, i know they need to be 12in away from the beardie...but do you think having them 11in away would be ok?

I have 4 4ftx18inx18in enclosures, and they're all stacked, one on one and one on one so i have a unit of 4, 2 across and 2 up. So this means that for the bottom two i would not be able to have the light on the top of the enclosure, i will need to have in inside, like i have my basking bulb at the moment. I have measured the distance and to the cage floor (without the basking rock, which i will have to remove, or move to the side) it is 11in away from the base of the bulb...

Do you think this is ok? Should i let it burn in a bit first? And can i use an energy saving lightbulb to give light buy not heat?

One of these?: http://images.google.co.uk/images?h...y saving light bulb&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi

Thank you!!

Hi there,
I went through this dilemma myself. However on reptileuv.com and all other sources it does state that anything less than 12" can be harmful for your dragon.
Im not sure how much damage there would be with an inch less, but Id advise you email Bob at reptileuv.com.
He's very kind and will answer all of your issues.

Getting too close to the dragon can be harmful for your dragons eyes. Keeping them too close for extended periods of time can eventually impair vision. That was from my vet. I do not know how long it will take for there to be a problem. But, I moved my basking spots a little further from the UVB bulb.

I am also querying myself - is that 12 inches from the basking spot or from the beardie? Iv rarely let go of my tape measure over the last few weeks lol! Just a questions for you UK guys, where did you order your mega-ray's from and what light fittings etc are you using? Iv been browsing for most of this afternoon lol!

I am going to say from the Beardie. I think that there is a link on ReptileUV.com for the UK people. I am not in the UK but, I am using a fixture that is mean for an outside spotlight/security type lighting. It says it can handle up to 220 watts, American. I am running a 60 EB kit on it. Sooooo I dunno if any of that actually helps.

Yeah I tried the link on reptile UV and the stockists were either awkward with shipping or added loads of tax on at the end (which Iv never experienced with online shopping!!) Iv been having trouble deciding on a fixture - might have a look into that security light idea. Thanks!

At the local Home Depot they have a electrical section. It has parts for pretty much all electrical type connections and other misc lighting parts. That is where I found them. I think it cost me $3.00 a piece.

Check Bob's question/answer section on his website. It says no closer than 10" for the 100w SB.

I think you're ok at 11".

http://www.reptileuv.com/mega-ray-product-questions.php?nav=h#s2

That's fantastic! Maybe the 12in is for the 160w then?!? It definately says no more that 10" from the BASKING SPOT...and this would be 11" from the dragon, so that's fine!

Thanks guys!!

And i ordered mine from kimbosreptileworld too!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
