Hi all. I found this forum last week in my searches for proper care for beardies and it has been very helpful. I thought I would join and see what else I can learn. I've answered some of the questions that I believe I am supposed to below the two pics. Please give me any tips that you think I should know/do. I really want to make sure she is properly taken care of. Oh, and she is going to be my class pet in my 5th grade classroom during the school year.
Oh, and excuse the background lighting...these were Christmas pictures I did last year of her.
My Dragon is about 7-8 years old
I have had it for 1 day, but my dad has had it since it was a baby.
Not sure on length but she's a big girl compared to other adults I've seen.
It is female as far as I can tell (one lump in the center of the base of her tail instead of two lumps with an indention in the center)
55 gallon aquarium but I am thinking of extending the height and making it a two level with a ramp to the upper level.
Playground Sand but I am looking at tile. For now, the sand is at least better than the small round pellet stuff my dad was using.
I have one ZooMed Repti basking spot lamp also puts out UVA light and I have a ReptiSun 10.0 18" tube but
I have to make a trip to Lowes today to get the housing.
Bulbs are brand new.
UVB will probably be about 8" from the lizard and the heat lamp probably about 4-6".
Basking temps I am playing with but right now it's about 105. Trying to get it closer to 100.
About 87 degrees on the cool side.
I have one stick-on "bar" thermometer on the cool side, one dial on the hot side and another stick-on that isn't stuck that I place in the basking spot to gauge temps.
I take my basking temps right on top of the log where she can bask, or I place the thermometer on her back while she is basking.
No heat rock or heat pad, though I do own a heat rock (from my dad).
The dragon has been eating RepCal adult bearded dragon food for a long time (most of it's life). I have recently purchased a new food with smaller pellets and some mixed dried crickets/worms because she doesn't seem to be digesting the large pellets well (probably my dad's poor care).
Right now, I am leaving food in there until I can get her on a regular eating pattern. So far she has not eaten since I brought her home yesterday.
Bowel movements seem to be once a day but she is passing what appears to be full pellets that have not been digested. I am hoping this due to temps too low and no source of UVB/UVA light which should fix itself hopefully.
I bathed her Friday night while at my parents and plan to bathe her once a week. She seemed to really enjoy it. I do not mist her other than bathing...should I be? I do offer a water dish though and she occasionally drinks from it.
I haven't had a vet check or fecal done. Waiting a month or so for her to settle in and get used to all these changes.
Now that I answered all of those, you can see the poor girl's care was not great. My dad didn't clean the aquarium much and left an auto water in the cage. She had absolutely no source of UV and half her cage was dark all day because she only had the one heat lamp with a 90w household bulb on one side.
Ever since I gave her a bath (she was shedding and couldn't get the rest off...the bath did) she has perked up and gotten a lot more active. Now that she has a fresh and clean cage, she is very active and is running all over the cage, climbing on the rock wall backdrop, etc.... I plan to build some new stuff for her enclosure but for now it is set up pretty nice.
