Mealworms spraying me?

Hi everyone. I was feeding some adult mealworms to my leo, and one of them, upon me picking it up between my thumb and index finger to give to my leo, sprayed a water-like substance at me. I have been breeding and feeding mealworms for years, and I have never herd of this or had it happen to me before...

Has anyone heard of this??? Are they supposed to do that???
It just kinda creeped me out.

my superworms do this to me anytime i grab them by the head between my fingers. i think its just a defense maybe for them. just urine probably, or maybe some kind of musk. not exactly sure. but yes it happens to me a lot.

Happens to me about once every feeding, pick one up and EEEEEEEWWWW its all slimey all of a sudden.
Not fun.

ive never messed with mealworms cuz my beadies not big enough yet. but i just wanted to know if it stinks.

They dont smell and neither does the spray. Its just icky.
Crickets stink way more than any other feeder in my oppinion.

ya i hate opening the cricket bin. its well vented an everything but it still stinks. wish i knew how to make it not stink.

I can't believe that that was the first time that has ever happened after all the years I have been dealing with them (AND superworms)
**shudder!** It was very disturbing.
