MBD!

Hi, i want to know does MBD last for ever. I ask this because my beardie girl had it when she was young but not to long ago. she appers fine now in perfect condition with all the calcium i give her but ever since its been about 6months or more since she stop showing signs. I powder her crixs everyday with cal. and sprinkle some on her vegi's(very little). Also petsmart told me that kale has some calcium in it and i want to know if thats true? thanks and please excuse my poor spelling.

Sorry your baby girl had early signs of MBD, but thank goodness you recognized it and administered calcium supplements.

There had be some people who were successful in reversing MBD, but only if it was caught early enough and the beardie was young enough where they're still growing. If the beardie had developed MBD due to years of neglect (no UVB or supplements), then it'd be tough to judge whether it could be stopped or not.

Kale shouldn't be given as a main staple. The vit A content is very high and could cause severe damage to your beardie (toxic).

no thanks to pet smart i got him from their and i noticed it and looked it up and yes she was young and i was so scared so ive been on that every day so she stays healthly but thanx for the type bout the kale. :mrgreen:

The form of vitamin A found in greens and veg. is harmless and cannot be overdosed. The plant form is just the pre-cursor to active Vitamin A and is converted only as needed by the body to the active form.
There is alot of confusion on line regarding this with many sites suggesting that carrots etc. are a potential source of vitamin A toxicity for dragons. Greens and veg. cannot lead to vitamin A toxicity."

The form of vitamin a that comes from veggies is also called beta carotene. Beta carotene is vital to metabolism, eye sight, and proper growth. Deficiencies in vitamin a can cause Hypovitaminosis A in bearded dragons which causes infection and swelling of the eyelids (which is often blamed on improper lighting rather than a nutritional problem). Kale and carrots are NOT bad for your dragon in any amount. I know breeders who use kale as a staple for their babies and I personally give shredded carrots as a daily staple mixed with their greens. Nothing on the nutritional sheet provided above says that those foods are toxic. "high in vitamin a" is not a bad thing from plants. Overdosing a multivitamin powder is a bad thing. :study: :study: :study:

ok but my beardie is reaching a year old now i heard that they stop growing length wise and just get fat after the first year is that true or is she still going to grow long ways?

growth can keep going till age 2 years in some beardies. Most will stop growing around 1 year - 1.5 years. Even though growth stops it doesn't mean that vit A is any less important so don't keep it from them. If you are supplementing with a multivitamin powder its STILL okay to give kale and carrots and other high vit A plants. The beta carotene will only be turned into active vitamin A if the body needs it.
