Male and female together

I know the question has been asked many times on here but how safe is it to house my male and female together? He is about 22 inches long and she is about 16-17 inches long. I have them in the same room and all they do all day is glass dance to try to get to each other. There is no way that I can move them anywhere else and I already have them in a spot where they can't see each other. Is it ever safe for them to be in the same tank even for short, supervised periods of time?

Hey Brit.....it's highly probable that he will terrify her by attempting to mate. She is a bit too small for that [ even though a full grown female that is small can be bred if she's good weight + healthy ] and he could really hurt her. They are probably in a constant state of stress if they see each other, not really fair for a male that likely has a desire to breed but is not able. And she sees this big potential bully . If you ever watch youtube breeding videos you'll get an idea of how indelicate it is, and some males are REALLY rough, they bite hard on the back of the females neck, may drag them around and even slam them into the sides of the tank. Even for a receptive female it can be rough, for an unreceptive one it is highly stressful and can be harmful. So my advice is to not let it happen.
