hey all. this is hambeast and smaug, male and female. they're a good bit bigger now, at least ten months old. they live together in a really huge enclosure. they seem to get along famously, even though smaug is a little smaller and definitely submissive. but they hang out all the time, frequently interacting ("tounging" each other, running around, walldancing, etc.), eating normally. when they bask together he of course usually takes the top spot; although they frequently share the rock evenly and sometimes hammy tolerates smaug on top.

however, a few months ago hammy blossomed into sexual maturity. hambeast is certainly an alpha-male now - every twenty minutes he starts headbobbing like he's at a slayer concert, emphatically "hitlerfisting" (what i've started to call his "fist smash" thing), and frequently mounting smaug. however, everyone i talk to gives me conflicting information. people at the store where i acquired them tell me they're fine together, while others tell me smaug is too young to be living with a male dragon, and yet others tell me no female should live with a male ever in the first place.

i don't want to come home to a dead dragon. i also want to avoid premature reproduction problems. what should i do?

You need to separate them now other wise you could have problems on your heads. They are solitary reptiles and do best on their own.

There's the chance you could:
A: end up with a much too young pregnant female which can hurt her health and even kill her.
B: have fighting because she's NOT old enough to breed and will fight back.
C: they will "snap" and injure or kill each other.

Best idea is to perminately seperate them.

a male and female dragon should ONLY come in contact for the purposes of breeding. At any other time they should live in separate enclosures. Now that the male has hit "puberty" he will continuously attempt to breed her (which is what the mounting that you are seeing is). The head bobbing/fist slamming is him displaying aggression and dominance. Eventually he will do 1 of 2 things. He will either succeed and empregnate her at which time you will have a hole list of worries such as egg binding, emaciation due to lack of nutrients needed to produce eggs, possible death. Or 2 he will get highly agitated from not successfully dominating her and attempt to kill her. Whoever the person at the pet store is that is telling you a male and female living together is perfectly fine needs to be slapped upside the head and fired from anything dealing with reptiles cause that person is giving out *****ic uninformed information.

Good luck

ok so while this might not be the case yet I think you need to read the posting titled
Is it Me???( A discussion on Breeding)
after reading that no way will Colasis EVER have a femal friend near him.

you guys have me scared.edited by moderator. i've been wanting to separate them for a while just because of a bad feeling, but the bad word removed by moderator at the exotic pet store have been telling me that it's fine, their totally old enough, blah blah blah. they also presented the idea of breeding to me as easy - and it seems that the opposite is the reality.

you guys have me terrified. he's definitely had a whole bunch of breeding with her and if anything happens to her i don't know what i would do. moving them into separate enclosures ASAP.

This is a PG 13 forum and we need to keep the language clean. Even though some of the words you used were blocked out (mods and Admin can still see them), other inappropriate words were not starred out *****. Please read this site policy on using bad language. viewtopic.php?f=48&t=36106

Yea definatley dont listen to the guy at the pet store (they make me :puke: :puke: )they are there to sell you 2 beardies and make money. As sad as it is I see to many pet stores just out for a quick buck and have no concern for the well being of what they are selling. In my opnion these people should have to face all the people they have steered wrong and deal with their anger OR JUST BE :protest: against or just plain SHOT.

For future reference check the pet shop before you buy and if he seems just interested in the sale he is not the right guy to be buying from.

if you are certain that they locked (ie his hemipenis penetrated her vent) then you need to check out the breeding section for care of a gravid female. especially if she is young as it will be harder to keep her healthy if she isnt fully developed.

it doesnt mean she is deffinately gravid but it does mean that there is a high possibility of her being gravid.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
