So Ranger has been sitting under his light and opened his mouth to regulate his body temp... but he does this multiple times a day. Is that normal??

Hello,

Actually the "yawning" you described is them thermo-regulating. It's what a beardie does when they have reached a perfect temperature and are happy with the temperature they are at. My beardies do that all the time. My beardies do that all the time.

Also, From the picture I Can tell that you have a heat rock, Is it plugged in? Because heat rocks can cause serious burns and can sometimes harm their internal organs because they can't feel heat from their stomach like a snake or leopard gecko can so they won't notice that they're burning.

BTW, You have a very cute beardie! :)

its not a plug in heat rock. Its a plain cave rock thingy. there is a heating pad stuck to the underside of the food area.. but it cracked the glass years ago with a different pet (its unsafe to remove) so it just sits there unplugged. I know the only heat should be from above and never below. I've been meaning to cut the cord off since it's just a useless item in this instance.

im glad to hear its not him getting too hot in there. I was worried. hes a rescue and my first lizard. (I'm a previous snake owner.. Snakes are much more low maintenance I've discovered) I've learned so much thanks to this forum. He belonged to my sister who just wanted a lizard but didn't take care of him properly. As a result he has MDB in his jaw which snaps crackles and pops. But once I took over I made it my mission to stop the spread of it. Which I did, although the damage is done, I want to make sure every aspect of his life goes smooth.

So if he is regulating his temp... is it bad that hes doing it every few minutes?? or is that still ok?
I've been told if hes defecating on a regular basis then its the perfect temp... and he has.... like clockwork.

Well that's good it's not a heat rock and the heating pad isn't plugged in. :) and I'm sorry he has MBD. :( Have you taken him to a specialized experienced reptile vet? and Have you tried Liquid calcium? it's good for helping treat MBD.

I Also Used to have a Rescue MBD beardie, Thor (Sadly enough he had to be put down do to all his organs shutting down  ). So I do have some experience with MBD. It does seem to just be a mild MBD due to what you're describing.

Does he have a UVB and is it on a screen? and I Think it'll be fine if he does thermo-regulate every few minutes. Just as long as he doesn't do it every few minutes 24/7 It should be fine. :) :study: and That's good that he's pooping regularly. :) Loki also is like a factory/clockwork when it comes to pooping.

Lizard yawns are really big …. wait til you see a skink yawning (showing off it's blue or pink tongue) … my water skink does some real doozies , as do the two old bluetongue skinks (George and Mildred)…. sometimes I yawn and if they see me do it , they do the same …. a moment later.

I haven't taken him to the vet. I had an Iguana that had SEVERE MBD. The only thing we could do for him was put him down. He was a NASTY lizard. It was a blessing on both ends to put Esteban down. He was Nasty even before he developed MBD in all four legs. But once it spread to his face... it was time. We had gotten him from the pet store so he came with it. The vet said it was a Genetic MBD so it was nothing we did yet there was nothing we could do either.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
