Long lasting live food?

I live in a small town and it's hard to find crickets or any other live feed for my beardie, we don't even have a pet store out here!! Crickets die fast, stink, get loose, and gnaw on my babies!! I can't get roaches cause my roommate is deathly afraid of them (she'll break out in hives so those are out of the question). When I kept a spider for a few day's for a science study thing we fed him canned meal worms. Can I feed my beardies these? I won't feed them anything I'm not sure they should eat until I hear some feed back. I have a male and a female both 2 years of age and not nearly as big as other's that I've seen. I need something that last a while because I really only get live feed when i go to see my parent's every 2 weeks. My mom was thinking it might be okay for them to just have live feed as a treat when I come down, but I believe they need it more than that. Right? Sorry I'm new to owning beardies and I've read alot and gotten advice from many different people, but it always changes.

I hear they can't have ice burg lettuce, So is romaine lettuce okay? And is there any other foods i should deffinatly keep away from them?

Thank you and Merry Christmas!!!

Here's a handy link.. be sure to book mark this:

Green for daily staples, Black for treats 1-2 times a week.
Supers, and horns make good semi staples, along with the crix.. Interesting that your roommate has issues with roaches and not the crix... you do know that these are way different from our homegrown pest varieties yes ? Not being insulting, just curious... :)

Also good are silks, butters, pws ( though these most likely are too small to bother with).

Yeah the poor girl is afraid of the plastic roaches thown at a mardi gras parade! Thanks so much! I've seen this sight before but my boss kicked me off the computer and closed out of it by accident. I'm going to try and get some super worms or silk worms soon. Thanks again!!

Keeping live feeders alive is a big issue for most beardie owners. Superworms last several weeks (months?) and I have heard that butterworms will keep in the refridgerator for a long time as well. And roaches will keep a long time, I have read (here and other places).

Whats the average amount of time crickets normally survive for then? Mine have been alive and kicking for about 3 weeks now. I also have locusts that have been alive for over 3 weeks. I'm only adding fresh oranges, vege's and stuff each morning.

A cricket's life span is about 8 weeks. I never plan on being able to keep crickets for longer than about 3-4 weeks. Buying crickets every other week when in a large city should be OK for two adult dragons, just buy 150-200 of them at a time. I prefer to keep superworms over crickets, but I have both right now.

Okay thanks for all the replies!! I went to petco try try to purchase some superworms or silkworms but they told me meal worms were better... is that true? The girl knew a few good things but she wasn't very friendly and i don't think she really cared what i was getting. /:

No mealworms are not that good of a feeder and should try to be avoided. The superworm should be fed to a dragon over 15``. Why dont you order off line?

Superworms and butterworms keep for ages. Our superworms bought in May are just starting to die off. I love supers, they are sooo easy, but of course my girl won't touch them. Silk worms are good, but I'm not having a lot of luck keeping mine alive  . Butterworms keep for 3 months in the fridge. Hornworms I get for an occasional treat, they are expensive and don't live too long usually (ours always run out of food). Phoenix worms are good, but small. Check out any of these places:

http://www.greatlakeshornworm.com

I've ordered from all but the first and been pleased.

Best luck I've had with feeders is superworms, my crickets have died off mostly again (I think I'm forfeiting mass ordering, I'm just losing too many of them). Good luck! :blob8:

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
