LIVE plants

I was thinking of putting live plant in my beardie's cage. His substrate is play sand and it gets to be about 80 degrees fahrenheit at the cool side and 98 - 105 in his basking spot. please tell me a solution to those tacky fake plants. :wink:

Buy nice fake silk plants instead or use some funky twisted wood for decoration. Live plants really aren't a good idea, not only do they raise humidity but they get trampled/torn up/eaten. In a very short time you will have a absolute mess in your viv.

I have a parsley plant in mine, it has been treated pretty rough and looks sort of sad right now, but I will probably get another in the spring to replace it. I figure it is edible, so if my BD decides to snack on it - no big deal.

I tried a plant in my beardie tank too.... Zi slept on it every night and smooshed it. It lasted a week. I don't think they really need plants. Maybe put a plant beside your baby's tank. You'll still get the "nice plant in the room" look without worrying if it's super pet-friendly.

I too, have had a negative experience with live plants. I tried several small cacti. I thought he'd leave them alone since they were prickly. I was wrong. I came home from work to see empty flower pots.

I've read that sand is a nice substrate. If it is not tell me what is. :study:

hmmm... I guess you didn't read the thread that I sent you the link for. It will explain why and give you better options.

Sand has it's problems, but it is not "bad". If the beardie is big enough (more than a foot or so) then any sand they ingest will pass through, as long as it isn't that calcium stuff. Play sand does work. Is it the best? Probably not.

Personally I use a combo of kitchen floor tiles and sand.
