Thanks for posting that Tracie. No wonder your water dragon was having problems with that bulb. I knew the way Giz was reacting was not my imagination, surprising the difference in his eyes once I changed back to a standard household bulb. If we just observe their behavior, it sure teaches us all a lot.

Ok, well I'm not really sure what I should do to light up my cool side now. :| Since Dud has a very well insulated wooden viv, any light that produces heat will get way too hot for his viv. I also have light fixtures that hang down into his viv.

I was thinking... Would LED lights work for a beardie? I use LED lights for my aquarium, and I absolutely love them: They are energy efficient, bright, and produce no heat what-so-ever.

Actually Jess, I'm not sure about the LED lighting. But if your cool side is cooler than 85, you could use a 25 watt household bulb just to brighten it up a little. Or just use a standard fluorescent tube perhaps.

I PMed Tracey, and she said they will be OK to use. :) I plan of going on a hardware store shopping adventure this weekend, so I'll let everyone know how Dud reacts to the new lights!

Will be interested in seeing your results Jess.

The only experience I have with LED lights is in flashlights, and boy those things are blinding!!

But I would assume they dial it back for bulbs to be used around the house lol. :D (well, I would hope so that is... :? )

Hi there, i'm having a bit of trouble with my ballast, I read through your post and helped out a tonne!

I have a Exo Terra Dual Ballast, and i've just ordered an arcadia 12% tube for it so swap out my existing Repti-Glo ones.

Just wondering if I could run 1 bulb off a dual ballast, or would I need a single ballast to run it off?

Cheers

Both my girls are in their own 75 gal glass enclosures w/screen top. All I'm using is a Powersun 160watt sitting in a dome fixture on top of the screen right over their basking spot (about 105 degrees measured w/infrared temp gun, 80 on coolest side of tank) do I need anything else? If so then why exactly? Thanks for the help, it's crazy that information like this isn't more easily accessible!

@Harry: I haven't used dual ballast fixtures before, so I don't really know hoe to answer your question. :| Sorry.

@Xtina: Your set-up sounds good! If you think the cool side is looking a little dark you can always add some extra visual light, but it that's optional. :)

Thanks Jess! Yeah my cool side is definitely a bit dim. What kind of light would I use just to brighten it up but not add any heat, and how should it be placed/mounted? I really appreciate your help :D

If you happened to read the last page, there is some debate on using CFLs so I don't know if I should be recommending those anymore. :| A regular household light or fluorescent tube light will be OK though.

Great Thread
Just started a few days ago and learned a bunch just by reading you thread. I have been running my heals of today to find a 18” fixture. I went to Wal-Mart, Target, Lowe’s, and Home Depot. I could not find any that were not very bulky in size. Any ideas on where else to check?

Great post :) I just have a few questions..and i'm sorry if they have already been answered...just want to make sure everything is 100% before I get a new baby.

Is a powersun not a good bulb.? Or is it just because it gets the tank too hot.? I was planning on using one when I got a baby, but after reading this thread, I'm re-thinking it :? The reptisun 10.0 is the only bulb i've been hearing about..and I can get one, no problem, and it would save me quite a bit of money, but then that would mean I would have to get another basking bulb, which if i understand can be a normal household bulb.? An a CHE for at night because it doesn't emit any light.? And an under counter fixture I can buy at Walmart for inside the tank.? That is all the lighting I will need...right.? :?
i'm sorry if this has already been answered  i feel like i'm making this harder than it has to be lol i just want the absolute best..

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
