Hi-

We've had Spike for 3 months and he's almost 7mths (dont have actual BD) , very healthy, eats well etc., His set up is the two bulbs -one UVB and one heat light.
His lights normally go on at 6:30am and when I woke up at 7am his viv was 65 F and he was very cold. His "heat" bulb went dead and we still have about 2 hrs until Petco opens...to get a quick replacement. He's UVB bulb is on and I turned on the "night" time light that we normally don't use.
Then I placed a regular 75 watt light bulb in place of his heat lamp to warm him up. I'm wondering if this is ok? Or is the regular light bulb dangerous for him? Does anyone know? I'm worried that even for 2 hours it might not be good but it's heating him up.

Side note, I just ordered the other day the ReptiSun 10.0 UVB Bulb so should be getting that soon-Does anyone know if that is the right bulb to use in pkace of the UVB and the heat lamp?

Thanks for any advice!

The only difference between a household bulb and a reptile heat bulb is the price tag and a pretty box. Reptile heat bulbs are also known to be unreliable. Some might last you forever, while others will burn out in a week.

2) you still need a heat lamp with the repti-sun.

Exactly what they said :)

You dont wana use anything in place of the UV ReptiSun ..... just wait until you get that to provide the UV, and in the meantime if you can, take Spike out for some natural sun so he can get his UV groove on. He will fine w/o a UV source in his viv (super temporarily) for just a little while unitl you get your ReptiSun, then it will smooth sailing.
And as for your heat source, you can use totallllllllllllllllly use a household bulb, just play with different wattages unitl you reach your optimal basking temp. Its not dangerous at all, in fact its alot cheaper and does the exact same job, its just a heat source for Spike :)
Just monitor the temps (aiming for 100 - 107 ish range, some people say 115, Blue is 4 months and it sits around 106 ... just get it in that general area)
put the ReptiSun in/on the viv depending on your setup, in conjuction with the basking bulb (whichever you choose to use, household bulb or "basking bulb" like they seel at pet shops) as soon as it comes in the mail :)

Wow-thanks so much for all that info! It's amazing when you don't know something how much you can fall for stuff in the pet store. Felt much better reading both your replies-thank you! Will wait for the Repti sun to come and bring Spike out into the real sun for some adventure ;-)

This site really rocks with good advice and people who care!

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
