Hey I have been reading peoples posts on licking and thought I could shed some light on the behavior.

Next time they lick look at the end of the tongue it has a dark spot in the middle and it almost looks like the tongue is forked, this is similar to any breed of snake. It is called the Jacobson's Gland were the Beardie or the snake like the air and pick up the scent of what the are looking for, this is weaker in Beardies due to there excellent eye sight to bad they have no depth perception lol. It is not as advanced as a snake but they don't need it as much.

sorry to drag on just thought i could shed some light.

Happy reading Matt XD

Hey, I'm glad you posted this!
I was thinking that maybe they had bad depth perception because some beardies seem to have alot of trouble picking up bugs, especially ones that either move too much or don't move at all, so thanks for solving that little mistery!

Happy to help XD

i was worried when i first got mine that why i read up about it and found out the Jacobson's gland

another interesting fact is that they have 3 eyes 2 normal eyes and if you notice on the center of the head of your beardie there is a funny looking scale its its 3rd eye they use against predators e.g. birds

I've heard of this before.. Is it sensitive? When I read about it I banned everyone in the house from petting his head, because I didn't want to damage anything!
But my beardie really likes his head rubbed, he'll immediately snuggle down and close his eyes..I've taken to just rubbing his snout instead, but he doesn't respond the same.
Do you know if it's safe?

Opps, I lied. There is one thing I've been meaning to ask someone..
I live in northern Canada, and it finally starting to get nice out here (ie, no snow). I know it's still too cool to take Monty outside, but do you know what an okay temperature would be? Does it have to be as warm as their tank is..?
This is my first spring/summer this far north, and I have no idea how hot it gets here.. Probably not insanely hot, but I'm hoping I don't have to wait till mid summer just to have him outside.
SO, my question is, what would be a minimum temperature that's comfortble for him to be out in, and how long could he be out for?

Also, just wondering if you have any idea if it's safe for bearded dragons to eat Shad Flies.. That'll be another hindrance, as spring up here = shad fly season, and they're EVERYWHERE.

Okay, so it looks like I did have a few more questions. :)

sorry long reply.

being outside try you beardie outside when it reaches around 19-22 degrees celcius and just watch his mood. My female hated being outside but my male loved it.

Beardies are like humans and they are all different so dont rush your dragon into different scenery as they are creatures of habbit and dont take nicly to change.

Shad Fly

i done some reading and didn't see anything to suggest why you couldn't it is an insect. I could only get limited info so not sure if people had tried it before but treat it as silk or wax worm and only as a treat.

If you do manage to give your beardie a fly let me no how it goes cause i think it would be another treat for my beardies.

Haha, I was more worried I wouldn't be able to stop him from eating them... During the spring months they're everywhere. They're attached to houses, buildings, cars, the GROUND, and as it gets warmer they start dying and then you've got shad fly carcusses everywhere.
I guess if they're not too bad for them he could help himself to some treats. :)
Thanks for your quick reply!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
