I would get the 22" , instead of the 34" , a 34" t5 in a 40 gal will make it near impossible to create a UVB gradient with a 34" bulb in an enclosure thats 36" in length. The idea is to recreate a gradient , so that when your dragon wants high levels of UV it has that option , as well as the option to escape the UV, just like we do with the heat. The only difference is the tool that it takes to measure UV levels is much more expensive, and not as readily available as a thermometer or temp guns , so we have to rely on the testing results of those who do have solarmeters to double check their work. It is ideal for your heat gradient to overlap with your UV gradient as well , as to mimic the sun as much as possible. A 34" fixture will also greatly limit your ability to expand vertically without getting too close to the UV bulb. You don't want your dragon to get much closer to the UV source then 12"

As to the two lower watt basking bulbs , i dont see any issue with that as long as your temps are in line. Basking bulbs are much simpler to mess with.

Carolina Custom Cages sells a T5HO 22" fixture/reflector with a basking light assembly, rhat can be mounted under the screen for $70 on Amazon... would there be any reason to not have everything in one nice neat semi hidden fixture?

Thanks again.. :)

I wouldn't recommend mounting a t5 inside the enclosure in a 40 gal. A 40 gal is already difficult to create proper UVB gradient due to small size. A t8 would do okay mounted inside of a 40 gal , but a high output t5 puts out UVI levels too high to mount inside of a 40 gal.

Yes a t5 puts out enough UV that adequate levels will make it through the screen. I keep my juvenile dragons in 40 gals , and i use the zilla screen tops and t5 fixtures.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
