Large Hard Urates

My dragon has been having large hard urates for a while. Since I am away at college I only see here ever 2 or 3 weeks and have yet to see what my mom was meaning when she said this. Today I saw and I truly don't think this is typical. She dropped a urate today that was almost a cm in diameter and like 3-4 cm long. It was very hard, almost like chalk. Is this typical of a 1 year old beardie?

Hi there,

Hard chalk like urates are a sign of dehydration. I would start giving daily baths until the urate softens up a bit, then you can cut down to a bath a few times a week.

I have this same issue with one of my beardies and have tried everything. The 2 main causes of this are #1 dehydration and #2 too much calcium. I tried everything, electrolytes, syringe feeding water daily, cut back the liquid calcium to 2x a week, and still his urates are rock hard. We are talking now I have had him over a year. I have talked to specialists on it, and they told me it could be Renal and something with his kidneys. Sorry for going on but, the best thing to do is to definitely get some water into him orally either by needless syringe, or by dropping water on his nose.

How old his he? and how much calcium do you use?
