Recently I've started looking for a large hide for Kazoozles. At 19.5 inches and 480 grams, with a width of 3" and a standing height, if he squirms low, of about 2" it's been hard. I'm not using any wood or similar materials, so that knocks those out. I need something opaque. That knocks out a lot of the guinea pig plastic houses I was looking at. Now I'm left with.... Nothing. Literally.
I need something solid that won't break down because I do a deep viv clean monthly, that includes disinfecting EVERYTHING in their tanks that isn't disposable. I soak cage furniture in a bleach water solution then spray down with veterinary disinfectant, rinse and let dry. Everybody had coccidia at one point, and there's a reason they haven't been reinfected.
I've researched and found lots of size appropriate items. They all have openings MUCH too small! I've looked into Exo Terra's caves and Zilla's rock dens. I've reached out to Big Apple Herp, LLLReptile and Reptile Direct. I've combed Amazon. I've looked at PetCo and PetSmart, online and in person.
What happened? I have two dragons who need larger hides, and they simply don't exist. Right now, Isadora is crammed into a rock cave, barely. She'll be a year at the beginning of 2016, so she has a lot to grow still. That cave won't work for too much longer. Poor Kaz hasn't anything to hide in. It's really sad, actually, because I can tell he wants to brumate.
Of course, this isn't the end of the world. Sure, I could put in a cardboard box. That would work. I just find it surprising that there simply doesn't seem to be anything actually being made for this size of lizard anymore.
I've considered other options, like the box. I could make my own out of foam and grout, but it wouldn't be able to be disinfected. LLL Reptile did point me at a tortoise cave that would work, but it's huge and has an extremely large opening. Not ideal for a lizard who wants to feel secure. A few people, LLL included, pointed me at these plain, black boxes. They're designed for snakes and have mostly small openings. I know this because I ordered the large, and its opening was 2.5" across, and Kaz couldn't fit. This box was gigantic (13.25" L x 9" W x 3.25" H). The next size up, Extra Large, has a big enough opening, but it's a whopping 16.25" L x 11" W x 4.5" H. That's WAY too large.
So... What's a beardie parent to do? Where have you been getting your hides? Have you had difficulty with finding a hide right in both size and opening for your beardy babies? NOTE: I'm in the US and have not researched internationally.
