Long time reader, first time poster. Thought I would share my story with you people.
Just had a very eventful experience with Kooper (my bearded dragon for those who don't know).
He was scratching on his enclosure like a lunatic so I got him out like normal (this generally means he wants to go to the toilet because he is a pain and hates doing it in his room, so usually have to run a bath for him).
I thought to my self, "maybe he will do it in the back yard if I put him down" (up until now I had never put him on the grass, only held him on my chest outside).
He was standing still for a long time, so I stood up and he flared up at me. I did not want to scare him anymore so I sat down closer to his level and pat him till he relaxed. I just let him chill out then all of a sudden, turned around and ran into a bush of flowers.
So here I am rummaging through a flower bush to find a bloody lizard. Once I found him his mouth was wide open and flared up more than ever (very scary and intimidating). I picked him up with caution without grabbing him because I wanted him to relax. Instead when I got up he jumped off and ran towards the BBQ.
This is when I started to worry a bit about if he ran under the fence and away, but had to stay calm. I decided I needed to trap him if need be so picked up a big pot which was near by ready to catch him like a giant spider.
After not being able to find him straight away panic started to set in until I found him. He seemed different, not flared up sort of confused. I realised this change, so put the pot down and got as close to his level as possible. I softly spoke to him and reached my hand out gently then proceeded to put him up like normal.
I had him in my hands with no restriction but ready to grip if I needed too. Walked inside and put him back home.
