Just wanting out?

Hello! Wondered if anyone could help with some feed back! Our bearded dragon is about 4 months old. She's active, eating and pooping and a friendly girl. My question is a couple times in the last couple days she has been trying to climb "glass surf" and usually when I'm in the room and wondered if its because she wants out. There's also times where she has moved out of her basking spot and she's turned darker and has stress marks. When I've noticed this I take her out and her stress marks go away. Or if I bath her it goes away as well.

I've read from others that they can change colour when they are trying to get more heat or uvb or if cool. Recently we just changed her basking bulb and her uvb bulb to Exoterra. Her basking spot is around 104 and cool side is around 78-80. With having summer its been warm and adjusting her bulbs.

A few thoughts I've had is : Is she climbing to get closer to basking light or when she's looking darker and stress marks is she dehydrated or too warm.

So hard to know!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi. Is the uvb a coil? If so that's more than likely the problem. Even if its not I would replace it with a reptisun 10.0 Tube those are one of the most recommended on here. How are you taking the temps? How big is the enclosure?

If she is telling you "get me outa here" , give her more time with you and out and about.

My 2 beardies have always been demanding and assertive , particularly hate being stuck in a skinky enclosure when they've pooed (and can see us).

We have an Exoterra 13 watt 150 uvb. She's 4 months old so have a 20 gallon. We will soon be buying a bigger once she out grows the 20 gallon which will be soon. I have a feeling she's just wanting out to play. I took her out a couple times today and she's very curious. Day time she wants to explore and evening she will cozy up on my chest and fall asleep.

Today was the first time in a while where I saw her basking with her mouth gaping. I know they regulate this way but I felt she looked too warm. I have a thermometer with the probe. When I took her out while gaping I left probe in to get a good reading and temp was 107 on basking. This was with an Exoterra 75 watt bulb. When i use the 50 watt it goes to about 90-94 so I'm torn because the 50 doesn't seem hot enough but with summer heat the 75 seems too warm. I read info online and its so different from our local lizard guy who has been breeding and raising beardies for 30 years and he says to go with lower temps.

She was sitting up basking with her mouth open but almost looked in a trance. I took her out and she gaped still for a minute but then cooled off. Wouldn't she move to her cool side though if she was over heating?!!

Re : 13 watt 150 uvb = s WAY insufficient. Beardies require 200 UVB (they are adapted for Australian central desert regions where the UV is intense in summer). This is CRITICAL for a healthy beardie expecially one who is young and growing fast and needs to metabolise maximum dietary Ca.

I personally think 107oF basking spot temp is too high for a juvenile / hatchie , the beardie will be even hotter. I'd aim for a basking spot at about 35-38oC.

The gaping is normal , my 2 do it lots, they will eventually relocate to somewhere cooler unless they are craving more UVA and UVB which is likely the case with your's.

Mine were all like that regarding wanting to get out to explore and scurry about (inside the lounge dining and kitchen). The more they get out , the more they want. Our 2 adults spend at least 2 hours out each per day and get the run of the house (they have individual favourate places to go to.)
If you decide to let your's go a roam about on the floor , be careful it can't disappear under or behind anything.

This is the Exoterra bulb I bought. I was suggested when I get a bigger terranium is when i can go for a higher wattage. They can also get too much uvb which I worry in a 20 gallon.

New Spectrum! Former Repti Glo 10.0
Ideal for all desert dwelling reptiles
High UVB output
Very high D3 conversion
Effective up to 50 cm (20”)
Provides necessary UVB rays for optimal calcium metabolism
Recommended for terrariums with dense screen covers
Combine with Natural Light for optimal visual light output
The Exo Terra Reptile UVB150 has a very high UVB output similar to sunlight in deserts. These locations receive more direct sunlight, therefore desert reptiles are more exposed to UV radiation than any other type of reptile. This bulb can also be used on terrariums with denser screen covers to ensure sufficient UVB penetration. Dense screens can filter out up to 50% of the UVB rays. The high Vitamin D3 yield index ensures vitamin D3 photosynthesis to aid calcium absorption and prevent metabolic diseases.

Thanks for your feedback, much appreciated. When I look at the Exoterra 200 uvb is states for a taller space. So I'm thinking that why it was suggested the 150.

I've read a lot on here about compact coil bulbs. When chatting with a local beardies breeder he mentioned that a lot of products have been corrected / changed and the eye / health issues were from products in the past. I see Exoterra sold and have great reviews.

Can anyone give their thoughts??

Hi. Again the coil are bad uvb they do not put off the proper amount of uvb. There are threads on here alot about them burning the eyes of their beardie, causing appetite and lethargy problems. The reptisun Tube 10.0 or Arcadia 13% tube are the most recommended on here. As for them regulating thats fine perfectly normal. Beardies will go to the cooler side when they get too hot. Remember they need about 100 for adults and 105 for babies to digest their food. I take my beardies outside and when they get to hot they go to the shade part of the yard. They know. :D

I use Exo Terra UVB 200 13W CFBs in my 2 beardie's enclosures , 400mm tall. My CFBs are in pendulum style dome reflector mounts. My beardies get very close to their UVB 200 CFBs and seem fine. My UV and 80W PAR 38 spot globes (sun like heat source) are on a timer, on at 6am , off at 9:30pm.

For my skinks I use Exo Terra UVB 150 13W CFBs.

If I had 500mm or 600mm tall enclosures I'd up to 26W UVB 200 CFBs for the beardies..

Thanks for your info. Our girl is doing great with the Exoterra. No glass surfing except she knows to come and stand at glass when she wants out to play.

Thinking back to before we made the switch to Exoterra basking bulb and UVB she's all round doing great.

I've come across a lot of info and have to be so careful of what to read and what not.

Sure is .... very confusing and misleading claims don't make it easy to know the best gear , and best bedding, to use/buy to keep our beloved little spikey children happy and healthy.

Even looking a Exo Terra' s site for their compact uv fluorescents I've noticed that irradiance values given in their own detailed specifications for their globes , especially the 13W globes doesn't make sense when comparing their UVB100, UVB150 and UVB200 13W globes .... obviously these tables were not double checked or vetted by anyone with any formal training in physics and the web page was put together by a trained monkey (a college holiday student or a clerk or someone in the sales department who really knows diddleysquat).

If you go by their web page http://www.exo-terra.com/download/sales_sheets/Sales_Sheet_Reptile_UVB_NA-EU.pdf

ie max irradiance AND UVA and UVB flux
13W UVB100 2350LUX UVA 630uW/m^2 UVB 105uW/m^2 @ 4"
13W UVB150 3070LUX UVA 690uW/m^2 UVB 115uW/m^2
13W UVB200 2350LUX (???) UVA 750uW/m^2 UVB 130uW/m^2

25W UVB100 3650LUX UVA 1000uW/m^2 UVB 170uW/m^2 @ 4"
25W UVB150 4340LUX UVA 1150uW/m^2 UVB 195uW/m^2
25W UVB200 4650LUX UVA 1350uW/m^2 UVB 225uW/M^2

My beardies get closer than 4" to their 13W UVB200 globes when basking (my globes are in dome reflectors (which tend to concentrate the UVA and UVB a far bit)).

My boy tries to ware the reflector dome as a hat , and plays with it (just like a cat , reached out with front claws and pats the edge of the dome and makes it swing a little , and then pumps the swing by bumping it with his nose.... very funny to watch , only he does this) . My girl is happy to bask about 3'- 4" away from the globe .

Ha-ha!! That is so cute and funny. So curious they are. Neat to see their personalities. Our girls is within pretty good range as well. We have the domes sitting on top of her tank on a screen but a light screen. She's growing so fast so very soon we will be buying the large size Exoterra viv.

At night time when I bring her out to cuddle she climbs to my neck and before falling asleep she ALWAYS makes this lip smacking sound! Very sweet.

All 5 (2 adult beardies + 2 adult bluetongue skinks + my sweet little adult water skink) do the snuggling up under the neck thing (my boy beardie is particularly affectionate with my wife and me, the girl just wants to go down on the floor and get up to mischief and dash about exploring and we've got to watch her like a hawk - disappeared yesterday afternoon and we found her sound asleep under the double bed) .
We also get the up near an ear thing ( regularly get tongueyed in the earhole by the beardies.

The water skink loves to snuggle (PERIOD !!!) , has lots of fav places - in my hoodie's hood ,or inside my teashirt or poloshirt collars at the nap of my neck (she also comes almost immediately if I call her by name, she'll crawl around my shoulders and when she reaches the crest will look at me or will climb over onto my chest , turn around to stare into my face and eyes as if to say " OK I'm here, what do you want ?", in my hand, under my shirt, in my wife's cleavage, in a pocket, .... just to name a few.

Was fun when the beardies were little and juveniles, and regularly climbed up ontop of my head (our grandson thought that was particularly funny to see), but they are too big now and too heavy and don't have grip like Velcro now (cause I regularly trim their nails). Doesn't stop my boy from trying to climb up there occasionally, especially if he sees the water skink go ontop the head (she teaches the beardies bad habits).

My beardies and bluetongues live in individual 4'x2'x16" tall enclosures that I built myself.
