Just read in another thread here... (about lights)

Hi,
I read in another post here that one should never leave the uv light on WITHOUGHT the (white light) on.
((Not the Heat light...))

The lady that I got my beardie from says she turns off all the lights at night except for the uv light (the blacklight)

Is this correct?

I have the Basking light on the left, the uv in the middle and the bright one on the right.
He seems to like it that way seeing as thats how she had it set.

Thanks in Advance!
Melissa

Can I ask what kind of uvb light you have?
The uvb light should go out at night. There is some debate on whether dragons can see black or red lights, but one of the best ways to provide heat at night is a che.
Maybe you could post a pic of your beardie's viv? This might help us figure things out and give you our thoughts. People generally have heat and uvb in the same spot, though.

((Not the Heat light...)) You should have a bright white light on along with the UVB light. A regular household bulb will provide heat and light in the correct wattage.

Is this correct? No,All lights at night should be off. They do see colored lights and it disrupts the day night cycle. What type, brand of UVB bulb are you using? Blacklights are a no no.

I know they are ceramic light fixings, all of them (3), the uv is smaller.
I'm sorry, I'm tired, so I will reply with a pic and the specs tomorrow asap!!

(BTW~ Been wondering what viv stands for?) (hah)

Thanks so far, I turned off the uvb just now :sleepy2:

I have all lights out at one time, i tried using a blue and the red nfrared night lights............and YES it totally confused him and he was sleeping during the day and up at night. Now he is back to a regular cycle. For heat at night...I have a under tank heater so I need no lights on at night.

Sorry, viv stands for vivarium, where your beardie lives. :)

I don't know of any uvb bulb that's also a blacklight, which is why I'm wondering what kind of bulb you have. Ones that people recommend are either the reptisun 10.0 tube fluorescent, the megaray mercury vapor bulb or the trex mercury vapor bulb. The rest are not so good and not recommended.

An undertank heater isn't the best solution for night heat because beardies can easily get burned by them; so you have to be really careful if you are going to use one. Most people would say no.

Also a ceramic heating element is.... how to describe.. well, it fits in a ceramic fixture like a light bulb but only puts out heat, not light, like a little mini space heater of sorts.

To the best of my knowledge black lights do not produce uvb.
I have a reptisun flu tube and a heat light that come on at 530 am and off at 7pm I use a timer.
During the winter months I use a 50 watt black light to keep temps warmer in the tanks during the summer months this isnt needed at all.
I have been using the black lights as a backup heat source at night for over 6 years now and have never seen a disruption in any sleep patterns.
Not saying it cant happen, but every dragon is diff.

HI,thanks for all the replies so far! And thanks for the 411 on what viv stands for

OK, here is a pic of Ricco's set up :

r1jpg23.jpg

And here is a pic of the lights (she gave me extra's too!)

r1jpg21.jpg

The way I have them set on the tank is the same way they are set on the table, so to make sense.
(cant think straight, since my mind is on the COLTS!!!!) ((LOL))

LOOKING AT THE PICS:

The left bulb in the pic on the tank looks JUST like the middle bulb, but it's white, not red or blue, and thats the HOT one.
The middle lamp has the blacklight bulb in it and it looks like a reg ole black light. (wonders where my old glowinthedark posters are?)
The Right lamp has the florescent bulb in it, like in the pic on the table. It says it's a heat + uvb 5.0uvb compact florescent.

The two extra blubs she gave me that are in the middle pic (on the table ) are red and they say nocturnal infrared heat lamp 75 w.

Whatcha think :?:

That's right, today's the super bowl, huh?

So, there have been a lot of pbs with coil bulbs putting out too much uvb and causing a bunch of pbs with the dragon. How old is he? What are his eating habits? Does he close his eyes a lot? Most people would recommend you buy a zoomed reptisun 10.0, that's the best fluorescent out there for your beardie. You can buy them here, they have the best prices.
http://www.petmountain.com/product/reptile-fluorescent-bulbs/504983/zoo-med-reptisun-10.0-uvb-bulb.html
Fixtures for it can be purchased at walmart, just an under cabinet one and put in the tube uvb.

If you want to stick with dome fixtures you can buy a megaray mvb or trex mvb. Lighting is kind of tricky as each of these uvb bulbs also have a specific distance they need to be from the dragon.

Out of curiosity, what kind of sand are you using?

Thanks Colleen!

Ricco is 1 yr and 4 months approx, he's from my middle finger to my elbow.
Here's a pic of him. (and I)

riccojpg16.jpg

I am using Playsand 50lb bag. (thats what she gave me)

Ricco I think is still trying to figure out what to eat. I said in another thread he poo'd 3 or 4 times carrots only...LOL when I 1st brought him home.
I feed him mealies and wax worms, and always have romain for him. I've tried grapes (yuk) and Im going to try yellow squash today as a treat. I just dont think the prev owner fed him alot of different things. I have crickets on the way from flukers, I think I ordered 3/8's (I HATE CRICKETS!!! shudders!) I dont know if he's ever eaten them or not.

I agree on getting repti-sun it has changed things for my beardies. I had problems with red infaread but not the blue moon bulbs...I don't know why. I noticed that the blue moon emitts a much less brighter light vs the red that lights up the entire tank. When I tried to go to no lights at night it severely messed up my beardies so I stick to the blue night bulb.

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in here, that UVB is a compact and I would not be using that at all! They are very bad for your beardie. That is why your beardie is closing his eyes because it is causing an irritation. As mentioned above the reptisun 10.0 is the best bulb! Or you could do an MVB bulb which is an all in one! Megaray is the best then t-rex then powersun. Also you should be using a bright white light instead of the red ones. Hope this helps. :D

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
