So I'm new to the forum and I just finished setting up the new viv that my Dad and I built for my dragon. I inherited him from my little cousin who no longer wanted him and he was in a tank that was much too small. Since my dad is really into wood working we decided it would be an awesome father-daughter project to build the viv together and give him some more space.
So, after looking around on these forums and the internet, we put one together. He did a lot of the staining and sealing of the wood, since I had to go back to school after break. It's all done, he delivered it this weekend and I got the tile in it yesterday, and Beardie (I know, really creative stuff from my little cousin, but now he is Beardie and I can't see him going by another name ) is just loving it!
The box is made of birch slabs, and the outside frame around the front glass is made of pine (all the wood is sealed, of course--I've read that pine is toxic to dragons).
We have a 36" reptisun 10 UVB and a 75 watt heater bulb. His flooring is 6x6 slate tiles and his basking slab is Hawaiian sunset rock. I've never seen him so happy! I am a bit worried that the UVB bulb is too far away from him, but he has a half-log to climb up on to get closer if he needs it....I still need to add a hide he can actually fit into as well.
Anyways, I'm just so pleased with the whole thing, I kinda wanted to show it off!
If anyone has any suggestions or sees anything that might be a problem, let me know--I'm pretty new to reptiles in general and may have overlooked something. I've done my best to research all I can about it, but there's always more to learn!
Also, if anyone has any idea what variety he might be, I'd be interested to know. He's mostly brown and orange but sometimes (when he gets a warm bath, or has been resting and basking) he turns orangish yellow and looks pretty awesome. His beard is red-orange. I am hoping he displays these colors more often now that he is in the bigger enclosure...
Thanks!
edit: I forgot to ask--anyone with plexiglass--whats the best way to clean it? I was wondering about vinegar and water. If yes, what dilution?
