Hey everyone,
So I recently bought a new bulb for Harry. He has a 40-gallon breeder, so we bought both a 60w equivalent and a 90w equivalent. They didn't have any 75w ones, but I can go back to the store if I have to. We had been struggling to get the temperatures up with a 100w reptile basking bulb so we thought we would try the halogen flood ones. Both bulbs are Par38.
The 6Ow was barely bringing the temperatures up to 85F. So we tried it with the 90w. The 90w seems to be doing a good job, just takes a long time to heat up. But this morning when I went to go check the temperatures I was shocked. In one area the temps were around 106F, which is perfect. But in another slightly sunnier area, it said the temps were around 118F.
Now normally I would believe my thermometer, I used one of the Zoo Med ones that have a probe attached to a long wire, but Harry isn't acting how he would with the temps being that high. He is actively seeking out this hotter area and laying in it. He has continued to remain with his darker colors that he gets when he is cold, and I have seen no open mouth to show he is thermoregulating. Do some dragons just like it warmer? He has plenty of other space to go to, where it is still warm but cooler than that. Could it be that the ambient temp isn't that high? It is around 19F outside right now, and my room is around 55F. The rock he is one feels warm to the touch, but my hand doesn't feel very hot like it has in the past with some other bulbs.
Please help! I am worried about the high temperatures, but Harry doesn't seem to be bothered by them.
Thank you!!
Edit: I just went back to check the temps again. The probe has not moved since I last read it at 118, and the current reading was 102.
