Impaction caused by urate?

Hi all!

My beardie just pooped a couple days ago after not pooping for over a week. I gave him massages, baths, and olive oil treatments for two days before it happened.

His poop was relatively normal (larger than usual and a little runny but that is to be expected) but his urate was HUGE. Probably an inch long and a quarter inch wide. He's never had a urate this large before.

Could this have been what caused his impaction?

And how can I prevent it from happening again?

Hi there....is your beardie an adult ? A week with no poo isn't truly impaction, but there are a few things you can do to help him poo more easily. You can try offering water via syringe on his snout, drip, stop, repeat until he [ hopefully ] drinks. I use a spray bottle, but I direct a small straight stream right to the mouth. Every dragon I ever owned drinks that way. A short lukewarm bath might also get him to drink.

If the urate was hard it can be dehydration, if it was brownish it could be over supplementation. So you might cut back on the calcium/vitamin powders and offer more water. If he eats greens, offer them fresh washed when they hold more water, and you can sneak a bit of iceburg lettuce in which has a lot of water.

He's not quite a year old yet. That is why I'm concerned. I will lessen his calcium supplements and helping him drink. He shows no interest in his water bowl.
