Parents should always be able to manage the animals in the house. No matter who owns them, they have to be able to manage an emergency vet visit & replacement UVB lights, as they're expensive. When their son/daughter is working part-time, they can take on some of the costs, but an 8 yr old wouldn't be able to raise that kind of $. So any parent who's thinking a reptile of any sort would be a good idea for a pet, just please look into set up costs & replacement costs for lights, set up, etc. It doesn't teach your youngster how to be responsible if you can't take on the responsibility of making sure the pet is well looked after. As a parent of a 27 year old, who at 20 decided an exotic pet would be a good idea, got Sweetie, then couldn't take care of her & we adopted her. Best decision we ever made, now we have 5 beardies & a gecko & my son thinks I'm a dragonlady!

OH MY GOODNESS!!! now I feel bad for what i posted under mine..LOL but nothing is wrong with our beardie, he is healthy, thanks to me ...my 16 year old just WILL not even try to take care of him, and I don't have the time.... so I am forced to sell him....read mine if ya can help....under Selling my Beardie.. I am reading post after post by people who are underage with a beardie with something wrong and their parents wont take them to a vet, or wont spend money on the BD at the vet. What is wrong with these people? The teens on here with something wrong with their BD's are at no fault, because they are teens and cant do for themselves in situations like these...you can read their posts and feel the desperation from them. It is the parents I blame.

Why would they not regard the life of that animal as a real life? I mean, when they agreed to let their child have a pet, that means they have to take care of the pet when something goes wrong. These people refuse to help a LIFE? These people would rather that BD die than take it to a vet? I just cant understand what their deal is. These animals have feelings...they suffer, they feel pain, they want to live as much as any other animal or human. They need our help when they are sick or hurt.

To the youngsters here...it isn't YOUR fault! Keep taking care of your pets as best you can. Maybe, one day, your parents will wake up.

I agree completly man, when I first got Zeus my parents were really hesitant to treat him like any other pet in my family. I was very persistant and got my own income to take care of him and thankfully before to long my mom fell in love with him too

Puffy'smama, please don't feel bad about having to sell your son's beardie; at 16 he should have been old enough to take care of him. I'm sorry that you had that kind of decision to make.

I spent $100 on a vet Visit for Nesoberu and took a day off work that cost me an additional ~$125 to try to save his life.

I think in those cases, it's more because it's not "their" pet and they never bonded with it so they don't care to spend the money.

It cost me the better part of $250 to try to save my Neso... and he died that night... and I would do it again even if I knew the results would be the same.
At least I can sleep knowing I tried to save his life.

Very sad ^ but I am sure this holds true with anyone who deeply cares for a pet.
