So Im collecting my first bearded dragon tomorrow im Sooo excited. Have done quite a bit of research so I hope everything will go well (im so nervous too!!) I'm buying a male from a store that sells only reptiles, it is a little hidden gem I feel, the girl was fantastic and I feel happy buying from her as she owns them herself and it seems more of an extended hobby than making money.
OK so my beardie is no-name at the moment- i want to get to know him a little first. Im having my vivarium set up for me so that I know its correct and i can ask questions too. with the initial set up i have a 3ft viv (i will be getting a larger one down the line!) i understand that this is minimum. I also get a strip UVB light which runs at the top of the viv along the back, a heat lamp, calcium powder, a thermastat and a thermometer. the thermostat is an on off one and so i may pay the extra to have a dimming one, what do you think? I have to set the hottest part of tank to 100-110 and cooler part to 85? Also get food bowls and a hut and a plant. Can anyone think of anything else?... oh and a beardie!! haha
Im getting an adult (although im not entirely clear when they are classed as adults?) he is around 14 inches long from memory but I guess he will probably grow more from other research. I checked him out in the viv at the store and he seemed happy, his eyes were bright, i saw him eat a cricket and i held him- he didnt have any burns or marks and wasnt too lethargic (they are quite lazy anyway right?) He did have a mad minute and run around in the viv so im not worried about his condition unless told otherwise- viv was clean and all other animals there seemed to be wel looked after.
She told me to feed crickets 3 times a week, i could use worms (i think she said mealworms?) 2 other days and always provide veg for them (no rhubarb!) Im happy with that, does that sound about right?
Substrate- paper towels- easy to clean and wont get eaten to avoid impaction. I hear beardies dont drink too often so goting to get a spray bottle to keep him hydrated, also give him a bath once a week. I can have him out og his viv for a few hours although if he feels cold i have to return him and not take him out for 2 hours after he ate so he can digest food.
Woman in store also recommended a good reptile vet so if i need anything hes avaliable. apart from that I think im all set- any advice???
Will write again once I have him- exciting stuff but scary too!! If i have anything wrong let me know!
Thanks and speak soon!
