so i am moving sandy to a 55 gallon. she is a avid digger. She is currently on a wood like bottom. This new tank i am not sure what to use. i want to cut down on the sound of her digging and maybe if i can satisfy this hunger for digging. She has been digging since she was born. It is driving me NUTS. i can be a room over and hear, her digging to china.
I put her in my males tank (he was chilling in the window) with sand to see what she would do. in a half hour she had dug 6 holes 5 inches down and still going.

So i will be moving her from.....

to a 55 gallon glass aquarium being delivered tonight for $40 dollars..yeah
I use sand for my male bearded dragon cause he doesn't eat off it or lick it. If he did i would change it. I know the cons and i am comfy with him on it. Not her. she digs so much it would be all over her

So what about dig boxes? what do they look like? can you post a pic? I need a big one..

Lord help me when shes fertile, i will be a wreak..lol

Try alfalfa pellets. IMO they are a pretty safe substrate to have for a dig box. They are safe to eat, and aren't usually dusty. Dudley LOVES his!

Each dragon is different, I have one female who digs all the time, always has so i feel your pain :p You can hear her on the wood cage if she misses the tile or she will bat around her plant or try to dig under her stairs. The pellets can work, but i find that some dont like it and just make a mess and leave it be. Have you tried putting in a bunched up towel? I had a male that was the same way but now he digs in his towel or fabric. HE will dig himself under it or just lay sprawled out on top of it and hes definitely calmed down ALOT on his digging.

I see the bowl, but that is way to small for my speed racer digging, that bowl would be empty in 30 seconds.
I will try the towel. I can try that now before we switch.

I would love to make a deep bowl for her. like a quarter of the tank be a digging side or even half. just got to figure out how....

pellets i agree would be the safest, of course i wonder if they will fly like the sand did the other day.. you could have surfed those waves

maybe a shoebox with a way inside it?

I've seen people take a piece of wood, you may want on at least 6 or so inches wide, so that it will be 6" deep, or more if you want that separates the tank and put sand in it. I guess just like a sand box, and maybe you could do that with pellets? Just a thought :)

If Dudley pushed the pellets over the edge they will fall on the floor obviously, but I haven't seen him fling them yet. They are really easy to clean up too: You can just vaccuum them up quickly, or sweep them into a little dustpan and return them to the dig box. :)

I second the alfalfa pellets....my female loves them. She digs in her little litter box like crazy, and has effectively potty trained herself. Got the box at Walmart for under $5. There are various sizes, and the larger ones would easily fit inside your enclosure, and should satisfy even the most avid digger.

I came across this completely by accident. My little guy (only just shy of seven weeks old) loves digging. He's far to small for sand, obviously, but I feel badly for him. I am SO happy to have seen this. Awesome idea, guys.

hey guys, curious about this towel idea. ive only had my beardie a few days, but ive been trolling this forum for a while gathering all sorts of useful knowledge. of course, theres always some surprises that you just didnt prepare for (half the fun IMO :D).

my girl likes to scratch at everything but the only thing she can have an impact on is her salad! pellets sound like a good idea but i would rather be lazy and let her play with a towel or an old shirt if its safe. off hand tho, it seems like scratching at cloth could be dangerous for her nails getting caught in the fabric? shes only 2 months old, i dont know if that means she would be more fragile or not. any thoughts?

ps thanks to all you veterans pouring your experience into this site, has been amazingly helpful

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
