I went into my local Petsmart today to look for some supplies for my feeders. I always walk through the reptile section to make sure they at least have food and water.. the conditions they keep these poor animals in are so heartbreaking. I've been keeping my eye on some very tiny dragons. I was i the store i few weeks ago and there were two of them. One looked quite active and alert. while the other one was laying gasping for air. I called over one of the attendants and said i think this beadie may be dying. He assured me that he was fine and he was just tired. Being a beardie owner, i knew he was beyond help and was dying. I killed me to watch him gasp for air-- i knew he would die without ever being properly cared for. After checking out the crested geckos they have i went over once more to check the baby beardie. I saw no movement, I once more alerted the attendant and said he had passed. He shrugged his shoulders and threw the poor little thing into a plastic bag, it broke my heart.
So today as i was walkig through the reptile section i checked up on the one surviving baby beardie and thank god he was still alive and alert. He had his little head as close as he could get to the one light that was provided for him. My joy to see he was still alive was soon erased when i glanced into the neighboring tank-- the smallest baby bearded dragon i have EVER seen. I am a 17 year old girl and this baby dragon was no longer then my small pinky. he was laying with his eyes half closed, his mouth was slightly deformed and he didnt look good at all. If i could aford the $79.00 i would have taken him home with me.. but i couldn't.
It makes me so angry that they dont care for these animals the way they should be cared for. Its sad, but i knew if i brought him it was just allowing another spot to be filled in with yet another doomed animal.
Is there a minimum age that these breeders can ship out these beardies to pet stores? This poor little guy i saw today looked no more then a week old..
