bearded dragons make wonderful pets (my boyfriend is allergic to anything with hair. so far the hamster doesn't bug him but a year ago we got two guinea pigs and that resulted in three trips to the hospital so we got a beardie.) but i would say that your dragon will most likely choose you. spend a while looking at them and if you can hold a few of them. Bindi was eyeing us from his cage the moment we walked in and he ran up to the front to check us out while every one else just stayed under the heat lamp.
when you do get him. bonding is important. talk to him alot and touch him and hold him. pick him up by coming in from his side not from above that will scare him. then use your finger to pet him down his back and under his chin. he may stick out his tounge and lick you but it's kinda like a snake he's picking up your scent and taste to get to know you too!
once he settles in you'll start to see a personality about him. Bindi will run up and down the front of the cage to get our attention if he has poo that needs cleaned up or he wants to run around. he's not fond of baths but i know most beardies are. you'll also learn what foods he likes and it may take months to learn what he will and will not eat. we finally got him to eat fruit after having him for four months (he likes red raspberries) in fact when i tried to get him to eat it i gently rubbed an end on the tip of his nose so he can taste the juice then as soon as i pulled far enough away he grabbed it from my hand now when i come home his nose is all red from where he was eating his treat! lol and just tonight he fell asleep with my boyfriend so i had to pick him up and put him in is blanket in his cage to sleep. so cute.
about the crickets. . . you get used to them. order them by the thousand when he is young and eating 100 a day. Get a kricket keeper. they come with black tubes (minimizes having to touch them) they hide in the tube and you just shake them out. you may want to get a feeder cage. We have a large custuom built cage that is about 2 feet by 5 feet but i have a 10 gallon stored under the big cage. i put him in the ten gallon feeder cage and shake the crickets in. it makes it easier cause i spent a lot of time digging crickets out of his cage (they bite when your beardie is alseep and can even kill your beardie) there was also and incident involving 600 crickets, bad balance, a four hour clean up and 2 dozen glue board bug traps. when you can keep everything on the floor you have less of a chance dropping your kricket keeper and haveing a mass breakout! lol. if you have any specific questions just ask.
