Hello, I have recently found this forum and thought I could get some much needed advice about my bearded dragon Biscuit.
I purchased Biscuit from Petsmart August 30th (I know I probably should have not gotten my beardie from a pet store) and she (I think she is a she) was very active and healthy looking. She was eating well and pooping twice a day until about the 2nd week in October. It all started when I one day noticed her walking funny. Her right front leg is swollen and looks like maybe she broke it. Her right hind leg at the ankle is swollen and at first it seemed to just be on the one side but now her left front elbow looks swollen. I also noticed her leg twitching sometimes (not much). She was also very lethargic and not eating or pooping. Every since I noticed this I have been researching to try and figure out what is wrong. I had a tube UVB I bought from the pet store (pet store brand) and I changed it to a reptisun 10.0. I had a day time basking lamp that was 75 watts and I switched it to a 100 watt. The temp on the hot side is 105 to 112 and around mid 80's on the cold side. She eats greens mixed with some type of squash and cucumber mixed with the rep cal pellets every day (she eats a small amount) and eats any where from 10 to 20 crickets dusted in rep cal calcium with D3 6 days a weeks and dusted with repeal multivitamins once a week.
I did so much research before I bought her and I thought I was doing everything right. I feel so bad because she is swollen and I don't know what to do. I recently ordered some Phoenix worms and just waiting for them to arrive. I was thinking about getting liquid calcium but I don't know what kind to get and what dose to give. There is only one vet around here that says she has seen exotic pets before but she does not often and does not specialize in it...I didn't know if I should take her to see this vet. I just don't know what else to do. The swelling doesn't seem to go down it has been getting worse. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Once I figure out how to post pictures I will.

Thank you....

If you upload some pictures on photobucket or similar you can just add the link to a post. How was your old uvb positioned? Did it have any plastic glass or screen in the way?

Taking her to an inexperienced vet can be risky, depending on what they do with her. They may be able to do X-rays though to determine what the swelling is and I think that would be relatively safe. Anything else (including possibly blood draws) and certainly any prescriptions should be done by a vet experienced with lizards. Where abouts do you live? We may be able to help you find a qualified vet.

I will try to upload the pictures to photobucket and post them soon. The old UVB was positioned across the top of the tank on top of a screen, now it is diagonal on the screen with the reptisun bulb. She can get pretty close to it now. I figured that taking her to a vet that was not experienced with lizards could do more harm than good. I live in Western KY and I have not found a qualified herp vet. Will her legs be swollen with MBD?

Thank you for your reply!

There are a couple lists out there if you google, but some of them are old. Ask around (maybe even the nearest big citys) for recommendations - pet stores, non-exotic vets and you could even try the nearest zoo. You may have look if you look out of state too, many people have to drive 45min-2hr to the nearest vet.
ARAV is a good resource, you may have luck there too. http://arav.allenpress.com/arav/findavet#stateHeadKY

MDB can cause swelling, other conditions like gout could cause it as well. Some of the more experienced members may have some idea for you. Aside from possibly the UVB your husbandry sounds correct.

For the uvb if you have the 1" diameter T8 it needs to be 6-8" away with no screen in the way. If it is the 5/8" T5, you have more flexibility.

What do you mean by the 1" T8 and the 5/8" T5? I'm not sure I know what you mean...sorry. Could you explain?

Sorry, yes I can. The reptisun comes in two sizes, you want to position the bulb based on what size it is. The T8 version is 1" in diameter, they are more common but have less output - so they need to be closer. The T5 is 5/8" diameter.

Ok...I just looked and I have the T8. I will look for the T5 to purchase. Thank you.

The two are not interchangeable, so you'd also need a new fixture. The T8 is still good, it just needs to be mounted that specific way. Many people mount them inside the cage.

This kind of looks like gout to me.. but, a vet visit is in order to rule out "kind of's and possibles". On the tank I would shift the basking area to the opposite side so she can get closer to the UVB while basking. Dial gauges can often times provide you with a false reading.. digital thermometers and hydrometers are available for around 10$ each.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
