I rescue them...

I'm a relatively new beardie owner who got into bearded dragons because I'm a complete geek. I adore my babies - Kain (rest in peace) and Smaug - even if one is currently buried in my shamrock plant.

I also got into them because they are possibly the most abused and mistreated animal in my local pet stores. I realized this after I had Kain for a year (got him as a baby - he never saw adulthood). I followed the instructions and advice I was given by local pet stores and owners...but I soon found my poor dragon suffering from seizures, impaction, and lack of decent food because the store was constantly out of crickets and he wouldn't touch the worms. >_<'

I enjoyed the time I had with him well enough to get another one months later when the pet store got another one in. I like to think I rescued it.

Now I'm ignoring what they tell me and looking for help with experienced owners. :study:

You may find me on the ER boards quite often with various problems - being a new mother to these beardies and the fact that the nearest vet who knows anything about reptiles is over an hour away (and even then he admits he knows little about these guys).

Congrats on getting your new beardie. Sorry to hear you lost Kain.
Smaug is a great name!

There are caresheets at the top of the pages here, and plenty of people willing to help you.
Ask any questions and we will do our best to answer them.

So sorry to hear about your Kain.
But..............
Congratulations on the New Beardie! :blob8:

I totally understand what you mean by saying that you have rescued them from the pet store. I too just like so many others was given a load of wrong and bad informations as well as products. An against my better judgement have purchase a couple from the pet stores because I've felt they deserve a better live. So I have a hard time seeing beardies in the stores. I try not to go there anymore as my hubby would absolutely kill me if I came home with another.

I look forward to seeing some pic's of your Smaug.

They had another baby in the tank with Smaug when I got him - but he seemed better off than Smaug was. Maybe if he gets lonely (or I decide I can afford another one) I will get him a friend. ^_^'

Okay so I guess you could consider this lesson 1  Beardies are solitary creatures. He doesnt need a friend and in fact this may stress him out so if you do decide to get another you may want to consider getting a seperate enclosure for him/her.Now of course the pet stores will tell you its fine but trust me all little Smaug needs is you :D

I figured that they might be - of course there would be a separate house for the other.

For for Smaug only needing me: I'm a very avid owner! I cuddled him all the way home from the pet store (gently!) in his little clear container (also to keep him warm, sure :D ). I hold him when I bath him, I talk to him almost constantly even when I'm just walking by I have to stop and wave at him. I try to refrain from picking him up too much or be too attention-hogging but with the mites and his relocation stress, I'm worried so I like to check in pretty often (which may not help with the relocation much).

Welcome! I'm sorry for your loss of Kain. I'm so glad I found this site just a few days after we brought him home. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of Smaug!

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
