This isn't really an introduction post since I've been posting for a little while now, so I thought this was an appropriate place to ask my questions. Some of you may remember that I've been trying to get everything ready for a BD for a little while now. Well, yesterday we were confident that we had everything in place and that it was time to go buy our new scaly companion. I went down to a locally owned, reptile based store. They had a lot of different reptiles there, very neat to see. They had some small hatchlings but since I had a 75 gallon set up I thought it'd be to big for them. They also had some that were between a year and two years old. They were a little overpriced but we went with them anyway.

For more info on my enclosure, check out this thread: viewtopic.php?f=34&t=144711 Since then, the only thing we've changed is we put up some temporary paper on three sides of the tank and we glued the probe down to the basking spot.

I went with the smallest yearling they had. It's a boy and he's about 16" long from tip of head to tip of tail. Is that a good size for a one year old? Is he big enough to eat supers? We ended up buying a box of 1000 crickets for $20 at the store (is that a good price?) and I picked up some collard greens for now, just until I figure out how much he eats. The crickets are in a 10gallon tank with dry cat food to eat and oranges as food/moisture. There are a bunch of egg crate pieces sitting upright against the side w/o the food and moisture. Is that okay for them or should I be feeding them something different?

When we got him home last night he seemed hungry, trying to lick anything that moved so about 2 hours before lights out we offered him 5 crickets which he gobbled up. I figured that was a good sign, correct? I was a little worried because after lights out he went to sleep completely upright. Little hands and head resting on the glass and his back feet on the tank floor. Is that normal?? It looks so uncomfortable. We tried moving him onto a blanket but he went right back to being upright.

This morning I chopped up some collard greens and sprinkled some Reptivite multivitamin powder on them. I moved him to the basking spot so he could warm up. He didn't seem interested at all in his veggies. Also, when he walked this morning he didn't move very smoothly. He kind of wobbled a bit. Is that just because he wasn't warm yet? His nighttime temps were 75 and 71. His basking temp I'm trying to get around 105 right now. His lights are hooked to dimmers so I can turn them down if they get too hot.

Anyway, I'll stop babbling now. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I want to be the best Beardie owner I can.

16-18" if I remember correctly
Supers should be fine most people will recommend your beardie be 15-16" before feeding supers
1000 crickets for $20 isnt a bad deal. Id switch to dubias though, I hated crickets the chirping drove me nuts!

No, not falling over or swollen limbs and he seems to be moving fine now that the lights have been on and he's been basking.

Also, he did eat a few veggies and he pooped. I was pretty excited about both of these developments. lol

Zeppy was 17" total length. I believe it is on the lower end of average range for full adults. There is a lot of variation in size. Some depends on genetics, and some on early environment. I wonder if Zeppy was slightly smaller due to his picky appetite.

Thank you everyone for the responses! I really want to fatten him up, he seems awfully skinny. I will try and take pictures tonight. I'm trying not to rush holding him. I put my hand in and see if he runs away or not. The last time I did it, he actually licked me a couple times first before running away. I think he thought I was offering him food. Silly boy!

I still haven't found a name for him. He has such interesting, light colors (when he's not stressed and angry that is. lol)

When should I try to give him his first bath? I think he'd really like one but I don't want to rush anything. Also, he really needs his nails trimmed. I have the nail trimmer but I'm not sure how short to cut them. Is it similar to a dog or cat nail? Is there that vein in their nail that can be cut?

Sounds like good size to me! Our big guy is only 12" but he is missing a good portion of his tail so who knows what is size would be with his full tail. He weighs 249g now which is a big gain since we got him. He poops sometimes twice a day depending on how many greens he eats. I love the pics of your enclosure you should put up pics of him in it!!!! I bet he loves his new house!!!!!

Can't wait for pictures!

We have a name!!

Jayne Cobb

I will take pictures tonight. We did take him out earlier to feed him some crickets. I am not comfortable feeding in his tank as there are a lot of places for the bugs to hide. I decided to give him a quick bath after feeding since we had him out anyway. He didn't seem too enthused but he did drink a few drops I dribbled over his nose. I made sure to dry him off and get him back under his lights as quick as I could though. Once my daughter is in bed I think I will take him out and take some pictures.

At a year old, is it okay to feed him crickets once a day?? Today I put some multivitamin on his greens and dusted his crickets with calcium + D3. I also have a calcium w/o D3. How often should I dust?? He didn't eat half of the veggies I gave him. Would it be okay to dust those every day?

You can feed him crickets every day since he's a little underweight. Use the supplements only twice a week. Once he's full size, once a week is fine. If he were to have obvious signs of calcium deficiency, you would use the supplement more often.

Okay, thank you AHBD! Once a week for all three vitamins? I have the calcium w/D3 and the one w/o. I also have a multivitamin. Should I continue to dust the greens with the multivitamin or dust the crickets with that?

Use them twice a week until he's bigger and filled out. The amount used really varies....for instance, a person may have a beardie that LOVES to eat, 50-60 crickets a day. Another one only eats 20-30 a day. The cricks are dusted. The one eating more cricks will be getting far more supplement....so, you would use any types of powder very sparingly. I usually dust the cricks, but very lightly.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
