Because i have had them for a few months and have not noticed any new offspring....about 90% of them are adults now, and have been for a month or so, and they are just making me spend a fortune on crickets...temp at the top of cage is about 80, the bottom is heated so about 90 there, they have a protein cat food and oats and organic cherrios cereak mix, as well as cricket quencher. humidity is never below 75%...what am i doing wrong??? by the way, i havent had one death other than what i fed to my beardy...so they arent dying off, they just arent doing the deed...should i play some barry?

Is it possible that yours were just young when you got them?
You can get some extra breeding adult pairs to kick start your colony.

Be patient.

You might up your temps a bit-------the hotter the better.

Make sure you have 1 male for every 10 females. Too many males seems to perturb the ladies.

After I culled my males I had an explosion of babies.

good luck!

1 male for every 10 females-----

do you ever notice your males 'swarming?' It's like a frenzy-----if a female has recently shed they will do this. That's how I learned I had way too many males per females.

lucky bugs...i wish i had 10 females at my disposal whenever i wanted ( no offense to any females, i didnt think you'd be reading in the feeder section) i think my ratio is almost 1 to 1...gonna have to do some reduction.

Well, you can be envious of your male roaches.

I know of one person who swears on keeping ONE solitary male for his entire colony.

Hah! I'm more offended that you think I wouldn't play with bugs! j/k I'm the one who deals with all the bugs in our house.. he can play with pre-killed mice, that's not fun!
I will also be the one to take care of our (impending) dubia colony! That's why I hang out on the feeders board.

Just be patient. Do you know how long it has been since you first noticed and adult male and female? Maybe the females just haven't had a chance to have the babies yet. Maybe the babies are hiding. If you have egg crates glued together, they may be hiding in between. Or they may be hiding in the frass. I think the roach equivalent of Barry White is neglect. They just want to be left alone.

Up your temps. Temps up to 105 are safe, and will increase breeding and development. Make sure to keep plenty of water supplied. Also, dispose of your excess males....feed them off or freeze them for use later. 1 male to 5 females is plenty.

Depending on the size of the colony, 1 male is not sufficient. Its can take up to an hour for the breeding cycle to complete, if you do the math, there isn't enough hours in the day for one male to "service" all the females in a large colony. Not to mention he will die off rather quickly at that rate....that is unless the roaches name is Hefner.

:laughhard: :laughhard: Dubia Hefner (complete with it's very own roach-agra)!
There is a rodent (a vole, I think) that the males go on a mating frenzy and basically "service" the females until he dies.

SO YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE THE ROACH PLUNG! LOL! I THINK LAST TIME I TALKED TO YOU YOU WHERE A LITTLE HESITANT ON STARTING A COLONY...MY 1000+ DUBIA CAME IN TODAY! IM STOKED I WILL ADD THEM TO MY CURRENT COLONY OF ABOUT 500.

MY ADULTS WHERE CLEANED AND SEPERATED A COUPLE MONTHS AGO AND I SEPERATED THE BABYS OUT YESTERDAY AND I SERIOUSLY HAD AT LEAST 250-300 FRESH NYMPHS. I KEEP THEM AT ABOUT 95 DERGEES AND GIVE THEM BANNANA QUITE OFTEN AND FEED OFF SOME MALES AND THE POPULATION BLEW UP!!!!! GOOD LUCK MAN!

What's a realistic timeline on breeding/nymphs in a colony? I know dubia are slower than others- but hadn't seen actual timelines.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
