I've have one beardie, and he is a three-year-old HypoTrans. I had always assumed that he couldn't black beard: with the reduction in black pigment. In the 2.5 years he's be with us, I've never seen him black beard.
But, last night when I was giving him his bath, the skin on his beard looked black. The scales didn't change colour. You could have knocked me over with a feather! He was black bearding!
But, little dude has no idea that he just isn't scary. Nope. Not a bit. No matter how hard he tries, his genetic mutation results in him being totally non-threatening: even when his beard is puffed up.
Interestingly, he was still black bearding slightly this morning. And his beard was a bit puffed up. Little dude is being a bit of a grumpy pants, which is totally out of character for him.
I just rearranged his enclosure on him, and he just (last week) came out of two long, coma like, back-to-back brumations (which was pretty scary). It is no wonder he is a bit out of sorts. Maybe I'll buy him a horn worm of two to see if that perks him up.
