Hello everyone. So ever since I got my beardie from Petsmart, his poo has always smelled not the best. As of recently, his poo has been smelling absolutely awful, so i started my research. I read that this could be a sign of parasites, so I called my local herp vet and got him in yesterday. Turns out that first of all, he is a she! I had to change her name from reptar to spyro lol. Secondly, she has 3 parasites! It seems awful to me that pet stores can sell their animals like this. She has Giardia (no idea how to spell), pinworms, and one other that esccapes me. I already have her on antibiotics and the doc said i caught it really early and she will be totally fine after her meds.

Hi Dylan....sorry to hear the news. Thankfully the vet caught it and feels confident about recovery. Is the third one coccidia ? It would be good to give Spyro the she-dragon [ what a surprise for he to be a she ! ] some probiotics while she's on the meds. Antibiotics kill the GOOD bacteria along with the bad, so something like Benebac, Acidophiliz or soy yogurt can restore the balance of good gut flora. Hopefully she'll make a quick recovery !

Be very vigilant about washing your hands thoroughly after handling her, you don't want to pick up any of those bugs. Don't let her crawl around any table that you eat from or wash her in your sinks.

The third is not cocidia thankfully. It was one that starts with an I. The only word i can think of is something similar to Isopra but that isnt correct. The third she did say was hard to get rid of but wasnt a real danger. The meds she is on is only for 5 days and shes already done 2 of them. She just opens right on up and swallows it for me. Its called arbon and she wrote "Worm Killer" on it so im assuming it was for the pinworms? She advised that i bleach everything in her viv so right now she is on newspaper with just her basking rock in there. Ive opted to leave everything else out. Should i leave out all of the other furniture for just until the antibiotic is done or until the next checkup in 2 weeks?

Good girl for taking her meds. so easily ! And isospora actually is a type of coccidia, that's what the albon is usually for. You can use red wine vinegar mixed with water [ about 1/10 ratio ] it kills germs much better , reportedly 100X better than bleach. You can use that on her basking rock too and maybe include one more piece of cage furniture that she loves but clean them every day.

Use paper towels for substrate. Easier to change after poo. Might want to consider temporary disposable basking area. Ask your vet for proper disinfectant. I spoke with two vets...one says bleach solution and the other uses f10sc. Some here use steam cleaners. Keep cage assessories to minimum until treatment is ended and all clear given.

She has been going poo in a sink that i disinfect after every use. Im hoping this will reduce the likely hood of the treatment being unsuccesful. Its very frustrating to not know if the treatment will work. I just want to her to he 100% comfy and pain free.

Those are no doubt good disinfectants, but the red wine vinegar is stronger, safer, MUCH cheaper and can be bought from your grocery store. I can understand any hesitation when " home remedies" are recommended, but there are write ups about RWV, here's one link and I've read it from other sources as well. The info about the vinegar is in the 4th paragraph.

Interestingly, many things that are natural are far better than what humans can make....spider silk stronger than steel, the glue that barnacles make is a stronger adhesive than most if not all man made, and the list goes on.
