Hi all, after reading some of the posts in this section, it seems that we have a combination of everything bad all others are experiencing. Granted, there were over year-long issues that led to this, but now that Leo seems to have recovered from his numerous illnesses/surgery/antibiotics, I hope we can approach his eating habits as well.
As of now, he'll reluctantly eat a superworm or two if put directly in front of him or wiggled right before his eyes, but without any enthusiasm, and not every time. More often than not, he'll turn and walk away. He won't eat greens, unless force-fed (I came up with a way while he was sick - usually rolled-up collard greens or slices of squash, sprinkled with calcium or vitamins, not much anything else), won't drink other than when getting a bath, and seems to have forgotten what a dish is for. He used to have a monstrous appetite and easily eat 10 supers a day, and he actually ate greens on his own as well, so he was quite heavy to begin with. Then, when he got sick and at the same time we experienced the notorious Megaray lighting problems (unknown to us) he got pretty lethargic, and didn't move much at all for months. I tried hard to keep him fed during the bad times, and he never really lost much weight. He got better last winter, and seemed to gain some of his appetite and energy back, but unfortunately, almost drowned in March, which let to pneumonia and later got an abscess in his mouth, which was removed in November.
He finally seems better now, the best signs being he actually started coming out to bask, and even attempts to climb up his tree, but he is still rather weak and inactive. I have a temp gun and a Solarmeter 6.5, and any lighting and temp issues we may have had, have been long corrected over the course of our struggle. He is 3.5, has never brumated, and doesn't appear to be now, either. I suspect much of it is due to his weight. He is 680 grams at 21 inches as of our last vet visit, less than he used to be, but still too heavy I think. When he moves, he appears to be more dragging himself around than walking or running (I don't think he can physically run at this point). He is most likely spoiled by all of the hand-feeding. I am afraid to just stop giving him food for any extended period; the most we've tried is two-three days, and he still wouldn't be any more interested in food after that, just have less energy.
So, I am looking for a good diet and maybe even an exercise plan (if there is such a thing), and any tips to relearn eating on his own would be much appreciated. Thank you.
