I was looking around at alternatives to dubia since where I live, I cannot keep them in my housing complex. I came across horseshoe crab roaches and they don't seem to be nearly as creepy as dubia (I'm terrified of them). I'm currently looking in to orange head roaches as well but the horseshoe crab roaches interested me because they live and breed at room temperature and no excess heat is needed. Any one ever tried them?

I haven't tried them but they seem pretty similar to dubias. They would probably make a good feeder option. My only concern is that since they breed well at room temperature you'll want to be careful to not let any of them escape because they could infest the house.

I agree. That was one downside I found but another good things is I've read that can't climb or fly. They do well on a dirt type of substrate. I may order one and see how they are just to get used to them as roaches creep me out lol.

Yeah ordering a small batch to test them out sounds like a good idea. I haven't had issues with my dubias escaping at all so if you pay attention to them when you're in and out of the bin it should be OK. Let me know what you think of them. It would be nice to have another go-to staple bug worth recommending. Taterbug made a post a little while back about using a dirt/leaf litter substrate for her roaches. It might be worth a read through because it's probably applicable to these roaches as well.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
