What do you guys think of this type of leash? SAw this pic on the net and did a screen capture. They call it the HIP LEASH.

Has anybody here ever used one like this or seen it being used

It seems to me that it will be VERY secure as there is no way the BD can get out of it. No matter how straight they make their back legs.

BUT can it hurt him/her if they squirm? By hurt I mean if it pulls around the back hip area or upper back legs, will it be harmfull. I dont know much about their anatomy and was curious.

I've seen pictures of those before. Personally I wouldn't use them on a large dragon or one that is prone to fighting a leash. I have nothing scientific to back up my opinion but I feel that putting that kind of pressure on the hips can't be a good thing.
I'll stick to the plain old zoomed harness.

Yes see this is whats getting me all confused.

If I use the "zoomed harness" like Gail mentioned (I presume its the one where the 2 front feet go through the holes and fastens on the back ???) Ive heard people say it can constrict breathing - which is NOT GOOD :?
And mine (I actually have a marmoset harness) manages to wriggle free if I dont make it tight (Guess shes one of those fighters Gail mentioned LOL :D ) so I have to make it tight. I havent seen her breathe different with it on so I dont know what the sighns would be of it being TOO tight.

NOW

The "Hip leash" I was worried about the same thing Gail said. Although the advantages I see is they can NOT wriggle free and there would be no pressure or breathing constrictions.

IDK :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: like I said Im curious as to alll opinions.

I don't know, I actually love hip leashes, much better than all the other harnesses / leashes I've tried. The other harnesses I've used I either haven't felt secure in the beardie staying on leash if they were to try to flee, or while on the walk the leash has worked it's way down the torso, no matter how I've adjusted and fiddled with the leash tightness. Also, the other leashes my beardies have hated, trying to get out of them or scratching at the torso leashes. The hip leash doesn't seem to bother them at all. It actually is quite secure, but does not constrict. If they squirm, the leash cannot go anywhere, i.e. down the legs, if it's not too loose.

I was in the yard once with one of the kids, who was on a hip leash, and my friend walked by with her giant 'ole dog. Scared the crap out of Geordi who tried to take off. He squirmed and fought to get free, even did the crock roll before I could reach down and grab him. The leash stayed put and he was perfectly fine afterward. I actually can't really see how they could injure themselves unless it were to be on too tight, and that's the same for any harness.

And you're right, you cant constrict the torso, because the ribs need to move in and out for the lizard to be able to breathe. I'm not sure that zoo med one would constrict to the point of suffocation because it doesn't go far enough down the torso, but :dontknow: My beardies hated that one, though, so I quit using it.

Anyway, I love hip harnesses. I actually learned about them from other people on this site earlier this summer.

You could always make one and see how it goes for you?

This is EXACTLY the problem I have. She even gets out of the jacket type  . She is a leash "fighter" Its gotten to the point where I dont use it anymore and If i take her out I put her in a bird cage so she can siak up the rays and NOT get away. Till I saw this one and thought . . . . Mmmmmmmmmmmm maybe this one will work.
She even gets out of the jacket type

I think I just may give it a go. I just dont want to do anything to hurt her. So how tight is tight enough? Should there be a little space (say to get your pinky in between the leash and hips) or less than that? You got any pics of yours with the leash?

That's quite the little Houdini you have there!!

Here's an old pic I took to explain to someone how to make it.

I can take another when I get home this afternoon to show how tight I keep it, because this doesn't really show; I cinch it enough to lay/wrap close to the skin, but not tight or pressing in on the skin to dimple it or constrict.

Another positive: they're super simple to put on and take off, no trying to put tiny front feet and arms into a harness

I put one on Robert. He kind of freaked and started running and biting, but he couldn't get loose. Didn't hurt him at all even though he struggled.

So here's those pics showing (or trying to show) how tight I put the hip leash

pointer finger to show approximate size

Geordi wondering what I'm doing:

Now if I were to gently pull up on the leash, this is how big the space gets:

Of course, before you take your beardie outside, put it on and try to get it off. That's what I did to get a feel for how loose it could be before they could get out.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
