Seems like just last week I was worried it was getting too low, well hello there nice rainy weather. I've been doing some self-searching, and will be still after making this post, but wanted to ask some questions to the regard of humidity.
* Wasn't sure if this would be the proper forum to post in, if not, please inform, I'll repost or if a Mod could kindly move the topic. - Thank you.
Today my Viv I woke up to 49%! humidity right before lights on for little Dovah. Giving the weather has been rainy, and we had the windows open yesterday evening, I can see why it is so humidity. ATM, it's ~79% relative humidity outside.
I know 50% humidity is a spoken limit, and I need to get this dropped to ~30-35%, trying to find a solution before it starts to become a problem.
- I do not have a water bowl in the Viv. Except when it's a low humidity level, I'll add a tad of standing water in his salad dish to aid that, and allow him to get a little bit of extra water when he eats a few leaves.
- Our windows are like holes in the wall, even when they're not open. We rent, so I typically keep plastic on the windows we don't open during the Spring-Fall.
- We live in a Townhouse style condo and I have the Viv upstairs in our side bedroom/my working area. Since it usually is the warmest room (corner condo unit, so the sun bakes the outside all day long usually will bake the room 90-98°F) for this reason I do put a window A/C unit to keep the temperature ~75°F.
- I have three lights within the tank that produce heat, two for basking locations, and a third for a general heating bulb to keep a steady 84-86°F on the cool side of the Viv. So, the humidity does drop fairly nicely towards the afternoon.
- Viv. is of wooden construction, with two large vents on either side for cooler air intake and warm air exhaust.
Overall question. Would it be ideal in our comfort style to purchase a dehumidifier for the room he is in?
- If I remove the A/C unit, it would be a high 90s all summer inside and it doesn't cool at night, it will eventually get down to the high 80s by 6am. Central Air in this place is about enough to do the first floor, air reaches the second level, but won't even begin to cool the rooms, which is why we got two small window units for the high temp. days.
- Leaving the windows closed, usually only have the back door cracked out, likewise with the front, and in the evening open the master bed up a few inches to allow cool air to come in. Room with the Viv I will open with a window fan blowing air outwards to pull the house air into the room.
Smaller questions. With the humidity reaching higher levels at night, mainly due to the lights being out, is this less harmful then if it were the same level during the waking hours or just as dangerous? Should I cover up the cooler air intake vent partially? Would leaving the rooms door closed at night prevent some of the humidity (windows in this room are the best the condo)?
A/C unit... Never paid attention to their operation, I know they remove heat, which if not mistake removes humidity from the air, but use to have one a few years back that would spit out on you with the cold air blew out. I believe mine being a newer one, doesn't spit moisture out, at least I can't recall any moisture coming out with the cold air. If this would effectively be a slight dehumidifier, should I go ahead and put the unit in early, or would it still be a recommendation for a actual dehumidifier unit? Usually don't place them until mid-last June, whenever it gets around high 90s outside.
Anyway, I will leave this post at this and continue reading through for more older threads to see if I can find some answers to my questions, but again wanted to go ahead and post to get some feedback/thoughts from the board. If you have any questions/concerns to my regard, please post. I'll watching the thread throughout the afternoon.
