Hiding

We got our guy Lenny in February. He is alittle over 6 months old now. We absolutely adore him but he constantly has us worried.

We haven't brought our guy to the vet yet. I have been worried about finding one that knows what they are doing. I don't want to create a problem with him but his behavior is changing a bit. If he is in his cage he goes strait to his cave after a few minutes of running around and he wont come out till we take him out. So i have reached out to a local reptile rescue to see who they use.

When he is out of his cage he seems super happy and had no stress marks. When he is in his cage he spends most of his time in his cave and wakes up in the morning with stress marks.

He is in a 40gal tank with a 100 watt basking bulbs and a zoo med HO 10 T5 24 inch light.

Is basking temp is at 97.

He is pooping normal. He currently isn't eating much but I think he is a bit over weight.

I would like to get him a basic fecal test and bloodwork just to make sure everything is working as it should.
He refuses salads but we are trying. He eats primarily hornworms and Dubia's. Which we gut load the Dubia's with squash and greens. The most he will do is lick a veggie. We get him bsfl and he will eat some but he is so lazy we won't get up for them. Out daughter has to pick him up and put him near the food.

He doesn't lick much water off his nose when we try but his poops always have a ton of extra juice to them.

How does he look? Does anybody see any concerns with how he looks?

I should also mention this has been going on for about 3 weeks. We had a month of rain. So at first I just thought it was the weather but other then being humid its not raining anymore. We are in Maine. He is about 260g. He used to come out of his cave about 30 minutes after his light came on.

I've got that same bed for one of my girls lol.
He looks pretty good, but he doesn't look overweight to me.
How are you measuring your temps? The little analog gauges are pretty much never accurate, and the infrared temp guns can be off on some materials. If you don't have the digital probe thermometers I recommend getting a couple. If your temps are hotter than you think, that could be the issue.

We do have prob thermometers we use for his basking spot and thats how we get the 97. We use one of the sensors for our weather station for the ambient temperature. This is the last 24 hour. It's been pretty hot and muggy the past few weeks.

Maybe back the temp down a couple degrees and see how he reacts. As they grow they don't need it quite as hot as when they are babies.

Those temperatures are just with a 75 watt bulb. It's mostly just the temperatures in the house right now. Maybe we could try air conditioning a room then using his lights to heat it back up. So it's overall cooler for him. He isn't venting often but I'm willing to try anything. He is just so mild with everything. He just let's us do whatever. He doesn't fight anything but that also goes the other way he just lays around and let's us bring the food to him.

Beardies can be unbelievably lazy. Zen is so lazy at times he won't flick his tongue for food, he will literally open his mouth and wait for me to shove it in. (The sad part is, he knows I will 😳) before Puff passed she was pretty darned lazy to, I could stick her anywhere and she would stay put for hours.

Is there other pets, or kids in the room that could be scaring him?
We have a Boston terrier but he can't see him from the cage and the dog is old and doesn't make much noise.

We have two girls a 7 and 11 year old. The 7 year old is the only he has eaten a veggie from and the 11 year old holds his all the time and he love it.

He dose seem scared when he is in his cage alone. If we are holding him he is happy. He didn't even mind being on the leash.

Something is definitely scaring him, it looks like. Especially since you say he acts fine outside of his tank. Maybe there's something in his tank bothering him.? An overhead fan.? The lights casting shadows that he has mistaken for a bird.? My two one year Olds are like that, especially if we turn our overhead fan off. First, I'd recomend a bigger tank. 40g just isn't big enough for a 6 month old, especially that chonky boi. He could be stressed by lack of space. How does he react to people coming into the room.? Can you tell what he's looking at when he's hiding like that.? He may be too hot or maybe even his light is scaring him. When we switched Nova to a tube light, she lost it. She got and stayed dark all the time and would hide and not eat much.

As for the salad, they say to try bee pollen but I had no luck with it. Does he like calcium powder.? I entice mine to eat theirs with sprinkles of powder in it or tossing a few worms on top.

Reading acidburns post made me think of something else also. When i first got Sinatra he didn't have line of sight into the house, he was really jumpy, but he was knew to me so i didn't know him yet. After a while he didn't calm dowm much and i knew something was off. I moved him so that know he has line of sight and he chilled right out.

Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
Getting ready for another day. Feeling sleepy. 😴
I just walked into my room and instead of looking at me, Swordtail's eyes darted directly to the ice cream drumstick I'm holding
Finally replaced Swordtail's substrate
