Not very "Goliath" looking right now! :D He's only about 5 1/2 inches long, but we just bought him yesterday. I am really hoping to just give him a great home and other than a bit of confusion on how I'm supposed to keep up w/ the cricket supply (all ready had to go back for more crickets!), things are going great. He's found a comfy spot and he is making himself at home.

I'm hoping that I can just buy 500 crickets online somewhere and maybe they will last for 5-6 weeks?? I've got lots of reading to do ... maybe this ? has been asked already. Anyways..without further ado, here is my first beardie:

Nice looking beardie! I ran into the cricket supply problems too. It wouldn't be too good of an idea to buy 500 online. By the time you fed all of them, some might be too big for the beardie to eat. I usually buy mine 100 at a time. My beardie is also 5 inches long. He eats about 10-15 small crix a day. 100 lasts a week or so for him and by the end of the week, they are getting pretty big.

Hey he's a cute little guy.I remeber when Baha'mut was that "big" ..good times, good times  .Well if you are kind a annoyoned bout buying crickets all the time try breeding them. There are a few methods floating around the forums so I wont bore you with the whole thing but you might want to check them out.I breed alll my own crickets now I save bout 50$ a months doin it and it's only about 15 mins extra work a day. It's not for everyone, but a few mins extra work to save money doesnt bother me.

~Congrats and good luck with Goliath~

500 crickets wouldn't last, they will get too big by the time you feed them, crickets grow fast.

You need to buy the smaller crickets, no bigger than the space between your little ones eyes. He will eat a lot of them. Buying online will save you lots of money vs. buying at the petstore. My baby could eat 100 per day sometimes. You should offer crickets to him three times per day at this young age, all he can eat in 10-15 minutes. Don't leave them in the tank overnight. They will hurt your baby.

Housing the crickets is easy, get a 10 gallon or a tall rubbermaid container. Then get empty egg cartons and paper towel rolls for them hide under and get (or make) cricket food and give them a water source (like cut up fresh veggies (easy to use since your Beardie requires veggies so you usually already have them on hand), water pillows, cricket water, etc. nothing too deep or they drown).

I bought 1,000 small crickets at a time, as he ate so many, they didn't last very long, which was good, as they grew fast. Yes, baby Beardies are expensive to feed, but it does get better as they get older. At one point my baby Beardie cost as much to feed as my full grown large male dog.
Keep in mind this stage only lasts awhile, they grow so fast.

You can also try silkworms. They are a wonderful feeder insect too. You can leave them in the tank and let him eat them as he pleases. They come in really small sizes and since they are soft bodied it is okay if they grow b/c you guy can eat them larger than the space between his eyes and be safe.

Make sure you are dusting the feeders with a supplement. Check out the caresheets on this site. They will tell you what brands to use and also a lot of other helpful information on how to raise your Beardie.

You can try breeding your own crickets to save you money too. But if you only have one reptile, breeding/feeding crickets might not be worth the trouble or money.

Congrats on the new addition

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
